Getting the mostest out of my new cab.

So, you can see I'm running a Laney AOR through an Ampeg 8x10, but I'm suddenly worried I'm going to be underpowering the cab.

There aren't an awful lot of threads about this on the internet, and the majority are on threads 5-8 years old by blues lawyers who think anything above 18 watts is cataclysmic and unnecessary - oh how they'd shit themselves in our little corner. Cue reference to Kyuss and end thread.

NOW, don't get me wrong, the fucker is loud still but I'm fairly sure it isn't as loud as my 4x12 even putting the 100 watts into the 4x10 solely (though my 4x12 has louder, more sensitive speakers) and the tone is actually very nice - not boomy or thumpy or flabby as I was worried it might be. I'm aware of a lower mid-range, but the AOR is very mids heavy anyway, so it's not a massive issue. They seem to pair up quite nicely, minus the fact that I'm paranoid about not using it to it's full potential here, and that the comparatively low watts in a guitar amp compared to the bass amp aren't getting the speakers moving.

SO; should I get rid and get something like an SC200, or perhaps a second 100w amp so each head powers a 4x10 section? Or should I grin and bear it, sell it on and waste more cash trying to find an empty cab and the same speakers (which are now more expensive) as in my 4x12?

I just want to get your opinions on it guys, I trust you for the doomz!

what is the rating on the ampeg and what impedance do you wish to run at?

Each 4x10 section is 400 watts @ 8 ohms, the whole thing mono is 800 watts @ 4ohms.

I've been running it mono on 4 ohms just to see how the whole thing should sound.

I think I should also point out that I DID also get it with the intention of starting a bass rig too

2xAOR.
Do it.

You know you want to.

Actually, I used to split a Carvin power amp, 50w per channel into my Orange 212 4x10 and an Ampeg when there was one at a rehearsal space I was at. It had a really good balance between thick lows and bitey mids and highs between the two cabs I thought.
So, knowing that a 100w AOR can power two 4x12s, which would be on avaerage, what? About 300 ohms a cab? You're sort of in the territory you need to be anyway (dudes that know about power amp design and classes as well as proper math on loads will chime in here and tell me I'm wrong. That's cool, I bow to your knowledge, I'm just shooting the shit).
I reckon get another AOR or a dedicated bass head (PVKVLT?) and 2 more 4x12s, split you signal to lows on the bass rig, AOR doing Iommi impersonation things and you'll be cool.

I didn't answer your question in any constructive way.
But that's your own fault for framing a question wherein the answer is always, "MOAR IS FUCKING MOAR."

I wouldn't worry about under powering. My 2x12 uses PA speakers with a combined rating of like 945w and I'm only at max ever pumping 50w into it and it sounds wonderful

I think it might be better off with 2 100 watters. I'll have a look around for something a bit heavier or bassier than the AOR to push the lower half whilst the comparatively bright AOR drives the top half.

Maybe I can convert a Marshall badge into saying "hail"

Your plan about getting something meatier to push the bottom half will shape up nicely.
If it were me, I'd split my signal from my guitar - run a bass boost (not something that ruins the signal and makes it muddy) + whatever effects you think the low end needs, then through a slave or power amp into the lower 4x10 for a massive amount of volume on tap.

Then you can grab another 2-amp/fridge setup and get Worship and Doom faceplates. :!!!:

I'm just really not crazy about 10's for guitar. I'll probably always play through 12's, although I could imagine a 2x15 paired with a 4x12 being an idea I'd entertain. But 10's have never done it for me.

That guitar is so fucking sweet, by the way. I'll PayPal you a dollar if you take the pick guard off though.

Currently working on a cab design with 2x12 and 1x15… it's going to be excellent :thumb:
And I also feel the same about 10s AND the pick guard

10's work better if you've got a Marshall tone going on. Helps keep it woofy, in a good way.

most of the set ups me and the guitarists in 2 of my bands always went this route. a 4112 on top of a 215. it was the perfect balance of everything.
