need advice on a cab

Post by oinkbanana »

I'm in a band playing keyboard and for the longest time we didn't have a bassist
so I held down the low end on my nord lead playing bass lines
Mesa 400+ head & ampeg SVTHLF-410 cab
it took me a while to find the right set-up for the keyboard, and I was REALLY happy with it.
kept me out of the high range.

anyhow, now we have a bassist.
I need to move out of the low end.

what cab should I get? something fullrange with lots of balls.
it has to look cool too. (playing out of PA speakers looks super lame)

I say play through a 4x10 (or a 3x10 if you can find one) on top of a 2x12!!!

I've always wanted to have that setup. Best of worlds.

Folks on TalkBass have said good things about Avatar (not the movie, the cabs): http://www.avatarspeakers.com/

I'm sure you could find something there... definitely some pretty nice options... and it's not just bass cabs - guitar cabs, too. Though I'm guessing that for synths, you still might do well with something bass cab-ish. Maybe a 4x10? Ooh - and you can pick your tolex colors & coverings... hmmmm...
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

I already have a 410
it's got a horn in it, but I keep blowing the lightbulb fuse because i'm feeding it too much high end sometimes, even with the horn turned all the way down (on the back panel)

if i were to run a 2X12, what kind of speakers? i know if i use just regular guitar speakers, i guarantee i'm gonna blow them with some of the low end synth sounds I use sometimes.

& ideally a cab that would be somewhat portable... no bigger then a 4X12

I've also got to worry about power handling since my amp puts out 500watts @ 2 ohms.
no idea what the specs are at lower resistances.

i'm gonna go check out these cabs tomorrow (the guy has two of them...)

For a brief time, I was playing around with keys through a Reverend Hellhound 40/60w tube amp and an open back 4x10. It was the tits. I never gigged with it because I can't tickle any ivories, but my brother did and he liked it a lot.

the acoustic 405 cab (he had two of them, willing to sell @ 250$ each) were really nice and super sweet.
would be wonderful and perfect to go with my mesa 400+ head
but they're HUGE.
and I can't run one cab with the head, i'd totally blow it
and it'd be impossible to have to luck both of them to do a show (125lbs each!), i only have a dodge neon

so the search is still on.
the head is 500watts peak, about 250-300watts RMS regardless of the ohms (since it's tube)

I'm gonna try a marshall 1960 cab this weekend, but i'm worried about the 'guitar speakers'..
i'm not sure how much bass they'll be able to handle, especially synth bass.

hmm.... still open for cab ideas.
does mesa make a 4X12 cab with four Black Shadow speakers?

at my local Mesa dealer, they recommended a mesa Recto Cab.
rated 280W (the mesa 400+ head won't blow it)
plenty of low end.

lucky for me there was one on criagslist and I picked that up (480$), a steal considering they were asking 1200$ at the store.
I'm gonna go into the practice space on monday to plug it all in to enjoy how great it sounds.
