I understood that the search was for a fuzz that has more sustain than the big muff, not for a fuzz that sounds like a big muff with more sustain.
+1 on pigtronix philosopher's tone adding stupid incredible sustain to any fuzz.

Frazzdazler has way more sustain than any big muff I've tried
Or just add a compressor

From what I remember, the depth charge had sustain for days. so maybe something in the Brassmaster family?

i used to use ocd>big muff(civil war) and it was fucking awesome. fixed a lot of the muff getting lost in the mix problems. definitely not muffled. you can get one for $90 and stack it in front of that muff. play around for five minutes to brighten up the sound and you'll be happy. plus it's just a cool and useful pedal to have on it's own if you want to do other stuff with it. stacks great with everything too.

Yeah, instead if replacing the muff or putting an eq or comp pedal in front of it...
Jus stack it with whatever distortion/pedal that fixes the muff's problem. You'll keep most of the typical big and hairy muff character, as well as the sustain, but you'll cut through a lot better thanks to the OCD you put in front of it. Tweak both pedals till you find the sweet spot, and call it a day. The OCD is a great suggestion, but I'm sure there's a ton of similar options out there that'll do fine too.
Don't give me shit for this, but imo anything that's supposed to sound like a muff, even the nicest most tweakable forume favorites, all compromise in the "cutting through" departement. The more muff-like it sounds, the less it cuts through a mix. Hence why I'd only use muff type pedals in combination with either amp dirt or my hotcake or something.

Seconded on the musket.UglyCasanova wrote:BE Musket? I used to have it. Worked great for classic muff sounds, but also capable of sounding clearer.
I've also heard good things about the Skreddy Lunar Module Deluxe Mini. Look up a few demos!
Regarding the sustain of the EHX Muff, it's not rocket science:...I loved the long sustain. This was done by cascading the circuit into additional sections, each one clipped by twin diodes.
