Unfortunately guys, I think my fuzz search is over.

Post by ThurberMingus »

I realized it today when I opened my newly aquired Frazz Dazzler that my search was over. After buying, trading, and selling things like: Algal Bloom, FZ-2, Super Fuzz clone, Tone Machine style, Woolly Mammoth, and probably a few that I'm forgetting.

Lots of awesome pedals, but nothing sounds as good as my Rat/IC Muff 2 in 1 my homeboy at Midwest Modulation built me, a pedal I've had through the duration of my GAS attacks. Nothing else seems as versatile or usable. Whenever I think "Yeah! That's the tone for my bullshit shoegaze/Built to Spill jam!" I realize that if I use the Rat/Muff instead, it sounds more better.

Don't get me wrong guys, I love fuzz, but I will never love anything as much as the pedals that my friend built me. Even though I want to support builders on here, I know nothing will ever sound as good as what I already have. Other fuzz toanz are cool too, but I don't find myself stomping on the Superfuzz when I could just step on my Big Muff instead.

With that being said, I don't think I'm in a hurry to get any more fuzz boxes. I'm gonna work on getting the rest of my pedal situation figured out, using my new Frazz as trade bait of course!

Here is a picture of that old bastard, I've posted it a few times, but I never get sick of it. I always feel goofy telling people to hit up Chris for projects when you could just PM someone on here, especially when he doesn't have a whole lot of original circuits, but he's a really good dude that makes awesome stuff. He's in some really cool bands too. Here's some pictures:

Here's a 2-channel Fingerprint he built for me:

Sorry if it seems like I'm shilling for my friend, I just love is stuff and wanted to let ILF know about another cool independent builder! :thumb:

Seems short-sighted and limiting to think that you will always prefer one fuzz pedal over another.

That's a very good point. I shouldn't say that I am totally done trying to find cool fuzz, but so far just about everything I have tried has fallen short. I would be lying if I said I didn't want to try an ECT or Internet or a Fuck or a Mini. It's just not a priority right now. I'll come back to fuzz when I'm set on all other parts of my board. I just can't find a whole lot of use for tons of dirt flavors, and I'm happier with my current flavors than I've been with most others.

Shouldn't think of it in those terms either. They're all parts of the whole. You may get everything else set, come back to fuzz, change one fuzz pedal and find that it totally throws everything off once again.

In conclusion: you're screwed, kid.

Yeah you guys have a lot of good points. I am definitely addicted to gear, pedal swapping has been an ongoing problem for me. Plus I'll be picking up a new amp soon so my whole dirt arrangement might be fucked. I'll let you all know as soon as the fuzz relapse happens!

ILF is so funny.
"Hey you guys! I'm really happy with my dirt section!"
"Yeah right loser, keep dreaming."

There's nothing wrong in being happy with the dirt pedals you're currently in love with.

It's when people start claiming the "fuzz search is over" that the flags start to go up.

We've seen it before, it's a vicious cycle.

I will say that my Lao Wiz FM-2 has absolutely taken quite a lot of wind out of my fuzz hunt, even bumped a few items out of the signal chain. I have a short list my eyes are always open for: most anything by Creepy Fingers or Basic Audio, a Kraken, a Mk1, but really all out fuzz fever seems to be subsiding…

Subsiding my ass…I just stumbled upon this thread again, and just saw how embarrassingly full of shit I was…I am trying to tamp down like 10x worse fuzz GAS than ever…
