Best hipster amp ever...

Post by rfurtkamp »

...the venerable Gorilla.

All the farty goodness of 80s cheap solid state, at a pre-internet mom and pop inflated price (which if you weren't alive, MSRP was the "wholesale" to most of them!).

All the epic gain staging of a broken DOD FX55B with none of the toan-enhancing love. The clean, well, it stood on its own with no pedals required - the sonic assault of a sixteenth-generation bootleg of Dark Star on thrift store cassette.

I keep waiting for the next generation of Post-post-rock people to discover them and dote on them like half the rest of yesterday's junkers.

Think..you could get on the bandwagon ..now.

Fill a closet or storage space with them for a couple hundred bucks, retire when they're going for $200 each on ebay.

And know you were ahead of all future trends.

I'd tell you to get a matching bolt-on Hondo II to go with it...but....there's no irony there left.

(and I am waiting for someone to come forth and tell me how much they rock their 6" speakered Gorilla in the fifth circle of hell and I'm a schmuck)

No, but I once passed up a Hondo II copy of a Coral Firefly and I've been kicking myself since. Never seen another. (Pretty sure it was a bolt-on.)

Yea, there's the very rare birds out there. I once played and took home on a demo with option to buy this Lotus set-neck, coil-splitting dead black LP DC-thing that slayed. Perhaps it had the tortured soul of a North Korean factory slave in it or something (and that was back when MIK meant oh god hide in the closet, only slightly above the godawful Sunn Strat things made in India or Vietnam bringback monster oddities), I never played another one even close to as good as it but it was the the then princely sum of $200 and I bought another beat up Mustang and Jaguar combo for that price.

Josh Homme has professed love for the Gorilla years ago in some guitar mag, thinking it was Premier Guitar. Anyway, the whole column was about his oddball gear obsessions and the Gorilla was def amongst them.

He was probably just fucking with readers though.

Yea, I assume so given that the prices on them are still $20.

Here's Homme's quote:

"There's this company called Gorilla that makes shitty amps. They are so shitty, I found a new in the box one at a flea market sale, the guy pulled it out and plugged it in, and it crapped out and broke immediately. I love that. Put a ribbon mic on a shitty little amp like that, and it's just, that's the sound"

Clearly, you have not played with enough Gorillas.

I remember having the best time every trying to play Blink 182 covers with my friends through the Gorilla. I seriously didn't give one shit about tone back then. The good old days!

A friend bought two for a cheap stereo system/amp. It "worked" in the fact that noise came out of both; hiss and farts I think.
