School me on patch cables

Post by xrleroyx »

My board is a mess. I have about ~15 colorful patch cables I bought at Guitar Center about a year ago in Lansing. They're not getting the job done. I'm looking for flexible cables (I'm totally down with making them myself) that can either be straight or angled.

What do?

I buy bulk Mogami cable and roll my own.

Haven't been able to find a store that sells it around me. Do you just have it shipped? I'm trying to eliminate some wasted space on my board, and likely some noise.

Yeah I just have it shipped, I'll try to find the supplier I use but you should be able to google bulk Mogami and go from there. Mogami make the industry standard cable.

Just depends, furutech make some very nice jacks. If you are a board user you might look into pancake jacks maybe to save space. I always go for quality.

What should I look for on furutech? I'm not really knowledgeable when it comes to this aspect of gear.

Also +1 to you, UG for without fail replying to every thread I post asking for advice.

EBS has some flat patch cables I've been eyeballing. Lots of sizes and apparently pretty flexible too.

I like George L right angle cables, if your board is pretty well set (I don't think they are sturdy enough to unplug/plug every day).

The wire is tiny and can snake through tiny gaps, and the plugs are tiny and will allow dense placement. You can really build a compact board and you never have to worry if a pedal's in/out jacks are right next to the 9volt jack, etc. Normal cables have frustrated me too many times when using pedals that have crowded jacks.

They are way too expensive though... one case where I wish the Mooer/Donner/Joyo companies would jump on the bandwagon.

I use George Ls right angle stuff too

In about 5 years since I went whole hog and bought a shit ton of the stuff, ive had maybe 3 or cables Ive needed to tighten or re-cut due to ground buzz (meaning poor connection).

I really like the flexibility, routability, customisation and lack of soldering. Im good at soldering pedals, but I hate soldering jack cables (!)
