Fuzz help #2 with better intricate description

Post by ManOfMystery »

I posted awhile ago about needing help with some sounds. Since then I have acquired a Fender Blender, I like the tone of it when it's sustain is full, but I feel like the actual notes get lost in the mix a little bit and it is also not really loud or clear enough. I know it's stupid to be a bit of a tone snob about fuzz but there is a certain sound I am looking for. Husker Du's Zen Arcade album has the exact tone I am looking for. I also have always liked Dead Kennedys guitar tone. I am looking for kind of a slight white noise wash and kind of having the notes blend together in full six string chords, but still being able to distinguish kind of. I guess what I am saying is I don't really want a fuzz that's so compressed it only works for single notes and two note chords. With my setup I currently have I have more than enough resources to make single notes sound crazy, I need a more chord friendly fuzz at the moment. A fuzz that really caught my ears was the Red Witch Fuzz God, it kinda had that 15w bad distortion sound. I can acquire oscillation through a feedback looper though, so a simple white noise, open sounding, washy fuzz is what I would like to get before I go for anything insane (WMD Geiger Counter :D). Oh and I love voltage suckers and a gate OPTION too for a Velcro sound if desired.

Sorry I am so damn picky, I just have been looking for this sound for around four or five years...

I've hear reports that Mould often got his distortion sound on albums by plugging his Flying V straight into the board and just overloading that. Dunno if that's true.

Maybe try the Mid-Fi Demo Tape Fuzz?

If you're looking for a fuzz that's still articulate, there are plenty of options: Fuzzhugger Algal Bloom and Lab Ratchet spring to mind.

I would say Mid-Fi Demo Tape Fuzz too... I <3 mine.
DTF is very dynamics too... love chords and notes.

Or maybe look for a crossover fuzz like the Fairfield Circuitry Four Eyes.

I think Mould's sound was mostly solid state amps and MXR Dist+ right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

If you're looking for a chord friendly fuzz, there are lots of options. Get a Zoom Ultra Fuzz if you want one that also lets you dial in gated/velcro stuff. It's perfect. Does the buzzy, chord friendly stuff beautifully too.

Overall, Big Muffs (there are so many options out there. I'd recommend the Blakemore Deus Ex Machina for your purposes but plenty could be dialed in for what you want) would probably be your best bet, but the Fingerprint was the answer when I found myself in a similar sort of quest. And the Boss HM-2 isn't a bad thing to try either.

Dead Kennedys guitar is Echoplex plus Marshall. Can get there very easily with an analog-voiced delay and standard rock distortion.

Blender is a mean, fun thing but it's not really going to get you distinct.

Yes, this. Don't let the fact that it's a Boss metal pedal scare you off.

Don't know about on record, but live Hüsker Dü and Sugar were two of the loudest bands I've ever heard.

A lot of his sound came from his amps and those amps were working hard.

Definitely an algal bloom for fuzzy yet articulate

Another suggestion is the TAFM
Gate option, but doesn't get too velcro-y
But yeah, you can super easily dial in a big wall of fuzz that's still articulate
I love mine very much

The Bob sound was Dist +. Live, into Marshalls. In the studio, direct, though sometimes with an early Eventide harmonizer to stereoize. (I don't recall if Spot mentioned the specific patch or algorithm they used.)

The Ultra-Fuzz can do very well for note-to-note clarity for chord stuff -- if you can find one, give it a try because I think it might do everything you're looking for. Some Fuzz Faces (and Tone Bender MkI and Mk1.5) will do good rhythm stuff if they clean up well with the volume knob -- usually it's about whether the bass woofiness isn't too out of control for the guitar and amp.

Holowon Furr Fuzz. Germanium White Noise Fuzz. Can get velcro toans if desired. Washed out and open if needed. Can get pretty think and not chord friendly too if all knobs are cranked.
