Oscillating fuzz madness - Where do I go from here?

Post by Eivind August »

Yay, it's yet another "which pedal should I pick"-thread. I think there was a similar one around here a little while ago, but couldn't find it.

So, in this world of pedals that we're all a part of, there has been one effect that always made me madly in love like an anime high school girl. It's the oscillating, noise creating fuzz. And I think I want one more. And by scouting around ILF there seems to be quite a few, all with different styles and purposes. Therefore I could use tips on which pedals you guys enjoy the most, pros and cons, areas of use, which builders for the more diy-type pedals etc. If there is any semi-comprehensive list of oscillating fuzzes out there, I would like to take a look.

I want something that sounds different from the ones I have (listed below). If it's big and has loads of knobs, that is a big plus (because mojo and toanz). But I guess any fuzz can be rehoused and modded as well.

What I have:
LAL Super Oscillo, Suneater Oscillator,TGD and She fuzz. I used to have the Fuzz Factory, but didn't find the oscillation that interesting on it, though it was the pedal that opened my eyes to the world of crazy fuzz.

What I'm looking into at the moment:
Fuzzhugger AB-synth Dream - Big and loads of knobs, seems to do alot of different textures and stuff.
Mellowtone Wolf Computer - Small and "only" four knobs, but seems to do alot of weirdness, and is pretty cheap. Could be modded easily? Is that sacrilege?
Shoe Pedals Silver Apple - Updated version of Wolf Computer, more knobs, fancy momentary footswitch, slighly more expensive.
Ugly Face - Don't know much about this, but sounds glorious in clips. Unique sounds. No production versions?
DBA Supersonic Fuzz Gun - Expensive, but seems cool?
Spaceman - Way expensive, but seems awesome?

I've got the Great Destroyer and the Super Oscillo. Had the Octavella for a while as well.

Need to look into that beautiful disaster!

Yeah I saw that and edited . Look into bit crushers like the oto biscuit, and then look at metasonix. It's the natural progression I would say.

I know it's not a fuzz, but the Catalinbread Teaser Stallion has switchable oscillation? Very sensitive to the guitars controls also.

I have an AB-Synth 5k... I can say it's the most beautiful oscillation I've ever heard.
And it's easy to control.

You should get one.

Well, you've already got the LAL Oscillo Fuzz, that one will be pretty hard to top.

If you didn't like the Fuzz Factory oscillations, you might not dig the Supersonic Fuzz Gun. It's harder and louder and a bit more crazy, but they seem to work similarly.

What I use mostly is the devi ever Dream Mangler on VFM chaos (and I think alot of devi pedals with chaos modes work similarly). It's less controllable and less musical than the Oscillo Fuzz, but it sounds bigger and wilder.

I don't find them similar at all, but if you want something similar to the fuzz factory the redwitch fuzz god II is like a useable fuzz factory with the oscillations easily maniputed to your pitch. Also helps that the oscillations are on thieir own stomp switch. The fuzz probe has more useable tones too compared to the fuzz factory.

I'll try to get an Uglyface going with some mods. That would be a great one to do a batch for. I think it was the second pedal I ever built and it was truly unruly.

That would be sweet, let me know how that turns out. That and the Wolf Computer/Silver Apple/Fox Calculator are the ones that have peaked my interest most so far, as they seem to be the ones that are most different from what I've got.

Thanks for the other tips as well, and keep 'em coming.

Btw, my "problem" with the Fuzz Factory was that I found the oscillation to be bit static and cold. I did get a lot of cool tones out of it, but I find that the other oscillation fuzzes I've tried are more "alive". If that makes teh sense.

Ab synth is like super controllable and easily reined in oscillation. The might make it sound boring but it's not - you can motorboat, squeal, get infinite sustain, sub octaves or arpeggiation.
I'd definitely get the 5k version. I have the regular and it is always thick, grainy, synthy fuzz. I think the 5th knob would reall open up a lot more textures.
Plus bassus Sanguinus' children drew a manual for it which is cool because all kids should get to play an oscillating fuzz from an early age and it's cool because it's Bassus, and he is ILF.

The fifth knob is "gain"... so you can have a lower gain fuzz.
