I like jazz (big band, be-bop), but don't really care for most jazz guitar. Which is weird since I play guitar and want to join my school's jazz band as a jazz guitarist.

I'm attempting to play it. I have minimal knowledge of theory and such, but I'm finding that the only way to really know it, is to do it.

Re: Jazz guitar anyone?
My problem with jazz guitar is the ultra, ultra-conservative approach to tone... neck pickup with tone all the way down, it's just boring. Some of the jazz-rock people with different sounds are also horrible to me (e.g. John Scofield).
Jazz horn players are ripping your head off with the most expressive, passionate playing, exploring the extremes of what their instruments can do. Jazz guitarists? Not so much. Something always seemed wrong with that.

That tone is the familiar one, but don't do it if you don't like it. Your tone and sound is your choice. F' the haters.

I break out some jazz chords when I want to see how clear a dirt pedal is.
