Your band, other bands, singers, songwriters, more.

There are some really cool songs I could see someone covering in a church setting.

Thrice wasn't technically a Christian band, but the lead singer was, and a lot of their songs had strong religious overtones. Come All You Weary would be a good one.
There are some mewithoutyou songs that are light on the yelling and screaming that would probably work.

Also, anything by Wovenhand. So badass.

A buddy and I had an idea for a Christmas album doing post rock type versions of old Christmas songs. From stuff like Carol of the Bells to Elvis' Blue Christmas. We were gonna call it Grey Xmas.

Anyways, I grew up Catholic and some of the hymns were so heavy already. I could just imagine a choir singing over huge walls of fuzz.

But what church would ever allow that?

I contemplated putting a fuzz on the board, we never really get 'heavy' enough for me to feel like I needed one. I'd love to put on one though. I kind of want our bassist to use my Rusty Box. That would rule

Except My Father My King. That song is ripping, and is basically entirely lifted from an old Jewish prayer. I don't know if that counts, 'really'.

But seriously, what does this stuff sound like? Is it like a scene with touring bands?

A few years ago, it was basically U2 sounding stuff. There's a bit of a more electronic poppy trend happening now. It has trends and changes just like popular music (because that is what it is.)
Most of the big bands are associated with a church or group of churches and put out records of original songs and go on large, sometimes stadium, tours. Some groups often tour the world.
I have also played with church groups that cover stuff like Saosin and The Almost songs.

On the topic of gear, I use all my regular stuff in and out of church. I've plugged some pretty gnarly sounds into songs that don't have them. There's a lot of personal interpretation, as far as covering songs goes, because a lot of the current "worship" music is so heavily produced in studio.
But, I am also a Christian who is extremely aggravated by the "worship" gear scene.

I feel you on that last bit fooman. I remember getting into a pretty interesting debate once about it, about a year ago.

My problem with the distinction "Worship music" is that, unlike Gospel music, it is not really a genre. In it's largest forms, it basically just mirrors popular music, but there a tons of bands who could be put under the "worship" umbrella that sound nothing at all like the big church groups.
Worship is a concept, not a sound. It can be anything to any person.

I feel you on that. I think my biggest problem that I've had (and the debate that I was in) was someone try to justify their spending as glory, which is not personally okay with me.

It was pretty much something to that effect.

Look, I know I spend a lot on gear, but I will never, ever, try to justify it like that.

Yeah. That seems like it could potentially be a real poisonous mindset.
Dual Verellens to 8 15s does sound pretty glorious, though.
