WTF is "worship" music?
My instagram is perpetually filled with pics of "worship" boards. Is this just a fancy spin on Christian rock? Does the minister pause his sermon and these dudes with boutique gear rock out in the name of the lord?
Do they make albums or do they just play churches?

Not exactly sure what would make a "worship" board different from a regular "pedal board". People don't say "my worship guitar", "my worship amp" or "my worship SM57". Were I still attending church and in the band I would probably have a smaller board, but would not call it my "worship board", would probably call it my "trying not to break my back board", I would probably leave the "muffs" home as well as my Schecter C4XXX bass as the strippers on the fretboard would probably be frowned upon.... So my Squire bass would be my "worship" bass?

Re: WTF is "worship" music?
I actually started playing in a church band about 9 months ago, I'd just kept it private. Our service starts with 3 songs, then prayer, then another song during offering.
Do I have 'dedicated' gear that I use for the service? Nah, just the same stuff I have at home.
It's been a pretty great experience actually. It's not a big mega church, and I don't use a crazy stereo rig or anything like that.
I will say I'm probably the only dude with a Fuck Overdrive on my board

I also used to play guitar for the contemporary service at my church a long time ago (mid to late 90s), and never would have thought I'd see crazy boards for it. I had a Crate amp with chorus on it at the time, that was all I got to use (never would have gotten the ok for any dirt pedals), the group had a keyboard player, and another guitarist with an acoustic.

But seriously, what does this stuff sound like? Is it like a scene with touring bands?

Re: WTF is "worship" music?
I'm sure it varies between churches. Our stuff kind of sounds like post rock.
Acoustic Guitar, keyboards, lead electric, rhythm and looping/ambience electric (me), bass, and drums with vocals coming from the bassist, keyboardist, and we have a female vocalist sometimes as well
As far as songs go, we do almost entirely covers of other songs

As far as I can tell, each church just has their own band. No touring usually. I know there are touring bands that are religious, but I don't think its quite the same as a worship band.
Worship band dudes are great to buy gear from. Usually good prices for stuff that they only took to church and back. At least, in my experience.

Nah. It's just a pastor, that's it. Our church is only about 30ish people.
We do usually play a song during the passing out of communion, but that's it.

Do you play renditions of old churchy songs, or just pleasant ambience?

They're all more current stuff- I think we've covered 1000 Foot Crutch, Matt Maher and stuff like that. Would be cool to cover hyms though

A buddy and I had an idea for a Christmas album doing post rock type versions of old Christmas songs. From stuff like Carol of the Bells to Elvis' Blue Christmas. We were gonna call it Grey Xmas.
Anyways, I grew up Catholic and some of the hymns were so heavy already. I could just imagine a choir singing over huge walls of fuzz.
But what church would ever allow that?
