Amp guys...Help me find a combo version of my head

Post by frigid midget »

Right, I know this is a long shot, and I realise that *IF* there is a good answer to my question, it'll probably lead me into pricey boutique/custom territory...

Still though, worth a shot.

Is there by any chance anything out there in a 1x12 or 2x12 form that sounds REALLY close to a Fender Tone-Master head? The super-sonic and pro-sonic seemed like the most obvious options, but it turns out they're not very similar at all...:s

Why not buy a combo shell and put the head guts in it?

Yes, this^ I think. I think you should just do that.

Isn't the Tone-Master the Zinky designed amp that's similar to the Mofo? I'm not that familiar, but you should research in the direction of Zinky Mofo. Bruce Zinky also had the rights to the Supro label for a while, and one of those was basically the Mofo. I think both of those are somewhat rare, but they were, at least, sold in multiple head/combo configurations. I don't know that they're that well known enough to be as expensive as you might guess. You might stumble across a good deal.

I would have thought the Pro-Sonic would be somewhat similar, since that was also designed by Zinky. As I understand it, the Super-Sonic (while aiming for the same goal) is not related at all to the Pro-Sonic.

yeah, Bruce Zinky's amps were actually the first ones I checked. The mofo seems rare and ridiculously pricey though. I'm patient, and I'm willing to spend a serious amount, but being i Europe, it'll be impossible to find a good condition Mofo mofo, let alone a somewhat affordable one:s

I've got a tone-master head, and I'd like a similar combo amp for recording/home purposes, something that's just more convenient for whatever situation where I don't want to haul an extra cabinet around. Converting the head into a combo isn't an option, I'd want to keep the half stack option, plus I'd want a back-up amp, that I could also use in my second project/band/space.

buy a second tone-master have a local cab maker build you a custom shell. trust me it will be way cheaper in the long run because nothing else will sound "right"

Yeah, you're probably right. I thought of that too, but I just wanted to rethink it for the last time, since I'm not yet sure it'll actually be cheaper it the long run. Those heads are rather rare and valueable around here, and that custom shell would cost me a pretty penny as well...:s
