Thickest meanest and cheapest fuzz?

Post by ThurberMingus »

Title says it all. I need something that ends lives for super cheap. Like stupid cheap. I'm going for a Lighting Bolt type sound but with a guitar. Most of my current pedals are more about shoegaze and indie jangle. I need budget utra doom/noise fuzz.

I will be using a modded Blue Box and V1 Pog for my nasty octaves. My main problem now is that I haven't played with the appropriate amp at the appropriate volume. We might be able to disregard everything asked here when I can do that. Until then, what is total cheap and total gnarly?

I think the Zoom fuzz is supposedly great. There's a velcroar in bst for 65 or something. They get really thick. That pedal is underrated. Does squishy and open.

FYI I'm not advertising my velcroar, there's another.

What are you using right now?

There's also a Marsh Chapel for $65 in bst right now. Its a modified muff with the mids boosted and the gain permanently set to end lives. One knob for volume and an internal trim for tone. Gets pretty gnarly. Listen to the bass tone on some Pissed Jeans songs. It's really similar to that. I'm sure it would translate well to guitar.

Behringer fz-2 clone.
Foxx clones. Dano, joyo.
Dano Fab Tone, the old metal ones.
Fryette SAS. Don't know if there's any left, check behind the counter of your local gc.

All can be had for <$50

First thing that comes to mind is the Dano French Toast, which is a Tone Machine clone.

This is my pedalboard (for this music) as of now: Behringer Muff clone>Modded Blue Box>Super Fuzz>Pog
The Behr Muff is what I'm looking to replace.
The issue could be a lot of things. I just put this rig together today so there's a lot of trouble shooting to do. Also I live I'm an apartment so small amp and volume restrictions come in to play.

I actually do have an FZ-2 that's on loan yo a friend. I also have the Dano Foxx. Never liked it enough to use it consistently, I might have to dig it out ta storage though.

Maybe my guitar is the problem! I'm using one of those weird Japanese 70s teles. I'll try a different guitar and more loudness tomorrow.

Try stacking a couple cheap shitty dirt boxes together and see what happens. Maybe running that foxx into the muff after an octave down from the POG would sound gnarly and not cost you a penny.

Also wouldn't the POG work better at the front of your chain?

The Pog gets all grungled up going into the Blue Box or the Super Fuzz. I will try to run it after them and before everything else to see if I get better results.

I think the POG has a buffered bypass. Running it first might not be too kind to your fuzzes. I like to run mine post dirt.
As far as cheap fuzz, have you considered the joyo ultimate octave. Think that is a cheap foxx tone machine clone.

The Guyatone TZ-2 is very thick and aggressive and generally doesn't cost very much.

If your muff clone is based on the muff circuit, it should respond well to starving. Tailor the starving right to balance the amount of "sputter" with "fuzz", toss an octave before it and you'll have a tone so thick and mean you'll need to hide the women and children (and household pets) when you pull out the 6 string.
