Any other Nilsson, Newman, or Van Dyke Parks fans here?

Post by Psyre »

These 3 artists don't really fit any molds. Their ability to stay true to whatever drive they had, during a time where it seemed the record companies had the most control is pretty refreshing. Here are some Favorites.

Love Nilsson and will listen to just about anything he did. The doco, "Who is Harry Nilsson (And Why is Everybody Talkin' About Him?)" is amazingly good, worth watching even if you're not a Nilsson fan.
The other two, not so much.
I've tried to like Randy Newman and just can't do it. Something about his delivery leaves me cold, and his songs are usually too schmaltzy/sentimental for their own good. But when Harry Nilsson sings them, as on "Nilsson Sings Newman", they're way better. The first 45 seconds of this are amazing (then it sounds too much like a Randy Newman song):

And while I appreciate Van Dyke Parks as a player/collaborator his solo stuff has never really done it for me either. But his Moog on this track from Biff Rose (who really doesn't fit ANY mould and I love to death) is ace:

Who is Harry Nilsson... is a great doc. It's ties a lot of the 70's pop scene together well too. What a partier, ehh? I just ordered the Mono reissue of Aerial Ballet. May be my favorite album of his. Nilsson Schmilsson is one he'll of an album though. Has everything.

I like Newman for how sappy his songs can be, he creates more of a blue within me than even the best blues music. Since he writes in short stories, often from overly eccentric point of views it creates another dimension. For example "Sail Away" being a 1700's slave trader's sales pitch.

With VDP, I'm agree with you. His collaborations are where she shines. It took a long time for him to get the recognition he deserved with Beach Boy's SMILE (where I became aware). Really for me he was the gateway that led to Nilsson and Newman. I really love "Song Cycle" and "Discover America". There is really nothing like "Song Cycle". My girlfriend just got me "Discover America" on vinyl. Never imagined digging Calypso covers so much. I find both to be extremely creatively inspiring.
