Noisy bit o' fun: Devi, Malekko, Mellowtone & Red Panda

Post by jrmy »

Hey hey -

I just posted my submission to the Talkbass noise comp (mentioned by BigChiefBC here: viewtopic.php?f=150&t=7831 ), and figured I'd post my piece here as well for the hell of it.

The guts of the piece have actually been posted here before, but it's been a while and everything's been tweaked, so it's sorta new. The title is "five tentacular squirrels in the tomato patch" because... well, it sounded good at the time. It consists of two tracks of Garageband percussion, seven drone tracks of my jazz bass being vibrated by an electric toothbrush, one track of my Bronco piccolo bass through a circuit-bent Boss BF-2, and one track of the Bronco piccolo (Bronccolo?) through both the BF-2 and a Red Panda Labs Bitcrusher.

The seven drone tracks are:
1) clean
2) Mellowtone Wolf Computer + Devi Ever Cherry Pop
3) WC + CP + EH Flanger Hoax
4) Malekko B:assmaster
5) Devi Ever US, Cherry Pop, EH Bass Synthesizer
6) EH POG + EH Holy Stain
7) EH POG + Bass Synth + Holy Stain

All basses were recorded through my Bass Pod on a relatively neutral setting, but the drones were given additional echo & reverb in Garageband. The percussion tracks were treated with distortion & two different reverbs in Garageband as well.

There's tons of cool submissions going into this comp... if people from TB are cool with the download link being posted around, I'm sure that one of us will post it here when the whole thing's done. The final submissions are due the 31st, so I'm guessing it'll be ready by mid-January or so...

Oh, if possible, I'd suggest listening on larger speakers... it sounds awfully dinky on laptop speakers since there's so much low bass dronin' & groanin' going on...

EDIT: ah screw it, I'll jump in and post my submission as well. It is called "The Intumescence".

It's all a single track, and the entire piece is just a single sustained note being modulated to hell by the effects. Signal chain was:
bass -> Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone -> Mid-Fi Glitch Computer -> EHX Flanger Hoax -> EHX Bass Micro Synthesizer -> Alesis Ampliton -> Mixer

I already whored out my OTBFXNCS* in the FuzzHugger side of this realm, but I'm posting here to remind myself to check these out later tonight when I'm on a computer that has speakers!

For mine, make sure you have stereo speakers that you can sit between. It involves auto-pan with a random mode.

Excellent! I love the drums in particular. Really ties the room together. :joy:

Many years ago I got really really high and listened to NIN - Fixed for the first time, and the insane sound I thought I heard (but really didn't), well, you have captured it with this eardrum stereo separation track right here, and I don't even do drugs anymore, so I know for certain that it's good. It definitely deserves the My Anus Is Bleeding graemlin. :omg:

Oh yeah, and I said this in some other thread on TB but I absolutely adore Seismic Feedback, amazing stuff.

In closing, yes, the d/l link to the entire compilation will get posted here. Somewhere. I mean, it'll be on my website so I'll do whatever I want with it! Provided I rememeber to pay my GoDaddy bill in a few weeks.

Excellent! Glad that you liked them! I sequenced them according to fluctuations in the drone signal shapes, so as to keep the arrangement somewhat random while still having the appearance of structure...

Yeah, sweet jebus - I just listened to BCBC's submission on headphones, and I think I need a My Brain Is Bleeding smiley. That is seriously badass. The panning puts the whole thing over the top, which is of course where it belongs.

Thanks guys. The panning is done by the Alesis Ampliton, which is one of their desktop ModFX boxes. When I saw that it had a random mode, I knew I had to use it in a piece.
