Look for good deals in used hi-hats, and gear in general. You really can't go wring with Zildjian New Beat hi-hats. Either 14" or 15" hats are solid.

Paiste 2002 Sound Edge hats are also great. Also Paiste Rude hats are pretty solid.

Buy any of those and you are set till you feel like replacing them. Check CL and Guitar Center used. There are plenty of deals to be had all the time. There are also a lot of sound clips with what they sound like.

Hell, there is a sweet looking set of Zildjian 15" New Beats here on Seattle CL for $160. Jump on shit like that! If you don't like em. You wouldn't be out any money if you sold them again.

I have also been giving a new (see used) Paiste 2002 20" Wild Crash a run on the kit. I have been subbing it in place of my 2002 20" Novo China. It has a similar quick decay and is a bit on the trashier side compared to my oher 2002s. The verdict is still out, but I might just keep it as it was fairly inexpensive because I picked it up used from GC.

The Paiste 2002 20" Wild Crash will be going back to Guitar Center. It sounds OK. The Paiste "Wild" line of 2002s have a lot quicker decay than the standard 2002s. This is not a bad thing, but I think I am just as happy to keep it a two crash, a ride, and a hi-hat set up. I don't mind holding on to the 20" 2002 Novo China. That is a GREAT China, but I think I might give it a break from the kit for now.

Just came back from a great practice tonight. The good thing about setting up again after a show, besides getting set up and tear down practice, is that you are given a chance to make fresh tweaks to your layout. I raised my right side crash a good five or six inches above where it normally sits, and it seems much more comfortable to play a bit higher. It also aids in my flailing. I feel like I have enough room to swing a cat now.

moving drums to larger room in my apartment has been dashed due to a structural issue i found. landlord has kept this from us as tenants and now we're taking him to court!
what an awesome turn of events!

That sucks! Good luck brother. I rent from a slumlord. You should see the way shit gets fixed around here. I have like, one three pronged outlet in my house. That's not too crazy for an old tear-down. But when water started to leak into my room, soaking the carpet around my bed, several times, creating black mold issues. His fix was painting over black mold, attempting to fix the leak, several failed times. Then falling back on draping a giant blue tarp down the side of the house from the roof to prevent water from coming in. Yeah... it's sort of a fix, but, in the most ASS way possible. And.... it sounds like a sail boat when the wind hits it.

I would tell the fuckers you are going to use the next few months rent money and get it fixed properly yourself and if he has any complaints about that then your lawyer and his lawyer can work it out. Don't know how rental legislation is in the states but if you use the right wording you can bullshit and bluff your way through most things.

I was never that impressed by the Wild series, like you said their decay is too short. They probably sound best in faster types of music like thrash or punk. I'm with you though, two crashes a ride and hi-hats seems to be just right.

What's funny is I'm usually pretty anal about having my crashes the same height but before last practice I lowered my right side crash down to the lowest I could go without causing interference with the ride and I'm really digging it. I get less arm fatigue not having to raise my arm to hit it. And it just might be my perception but I don't seem to have to hit it as hard to get the same volume.

What... the... fuck..... Black Mold ain't nothin to fuck with. I dunno about your local laws but you can get a house condemned for black mold around here. Also renters laws around here say that if you spend money to fix issues with the property it can be applied towards your rent like Kaos said, but I think there has to be an agreement with the slumlord.
