Bartok String Quartets
Elliot Carter has bunch of awesome stuff.
i'm a HUGE fan of Louis Andriessen:

some of the Bang on a Can-affiliated composers have great stuff - Michael Gordon, David Lang, Lois V. Vierk
some of the spectral composers have really cool pieces- Radulescu, Murail, etc.
if you're in the mood for (mostly) mellow dissonant tone clusters, Morton Feldman is always fantastic

Re: Hey, let's talk about "Classical" "music"
Loving a lot of the music in this thread. Messaien and Scriabin are two of my favorites. Scriabin's theories about color and music are fascinating: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_ ... _of_colour
Shit is about to get real with some opera. Mozart wrote some incredible love songs. My favorite is Un'aura amorosa from Cosi fan tutte. He's saying that they don't need food if their beloved feeds their hearts love (which is the most opera thing ever):

Pavarotti singing Una furtiva lagrima from Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore.

The Sea interludes from Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten:

For all the Looney Tunes fans, the overture to Rossini's Barber of Seville:

Now for some non-opera classical music, Stravinsky's In memoriam Dylan Thomas:

The Ecstasies Above by Tarik O'Regan - a setting of Poe's poem of the same name:

Mahler's Kindertotenlieder, which translates to Songs on the Death of Children. How metal is that? Some great brass moments throughout.
