Picked up a SG this weekend...

Post by braaandooon »

Came across a 2001 Gibson SG special in flip flop, always wanted one of these years ago, just couldn't spring the gibson type dough as a teenager. Suprisingly the guitar was cheap and came with a pretty decent hardshell case, cleaned her up, put a duncan distortion in the bridge, heavier strings, and schaller strap locks. A few minor adjustments and plays perfect. Here she is with the rest of the rig...

Amp is a 73 Traynor YRM 1 reverb master, awesome amp that is more blackface, than the the more bassman influenced YBA-1, was suprised to see the original caps were like new, no mods, but the reverb unit had been replaced with a blackface type longer delay unit, although I still have the original reverb tank. Original mullards were smashed in shipping which was upsetting as I was due to make a pretty penny off of them on the bay. Ended up throwing some big bottle EH 6ca7's in the power section and really like the tight bottom end those offer over el34's. Faceplate tolex was stained and stank, replaced it with mesa grill cloth to match my mesa cabinets. Glued the Traynor nameplate back together and sprayed it black, also reconditioned the tolex. Bought it cheap, and turned it into a nice player.

Pedals are korg pitchblack-> zoom ultra fuzz-> lastgasp lluna-> boss hm-2-> boss rv-3...

Neck is thick, definatly 50's type...

Thanks for the compliments, really digging this rig, does everything from clean to downright evil, still playing with amp eq and pickup height but my ears are close to sastisfied.

That's an interesting color. Looks much more green than pelham.

Would look sweet with chrome pickup covers.

The color was a limited run in the early 2000's, pictures don't seem to do this thing any justice, doesn't help that I suck with a camera. Seems to flip from gibson's "inverness green" to "pelham blue". I remember seeing chino from deftones playing one of these when they were touring white pony, running it into a green matamp stack. I've always admired that setup, sucks that matamps are nowhere close to my budget.

I have some nickel pickup covers, but the pole spacing from the duncan doesn't line up, still on the fence as to buying new ones, as I think I like the bare bones look, although if it was a standard I'm sure I'd feel differently.

sexy guitar! I picked up an 02' SG Studio for pretty cheap, with new hard case cause it has a minor crack at the neck/body joint. It doesn't seem to be too deep, or a problem right now.

I was all about slim neck guitars for years but I realized (I have big hands) that fatter necks are my speed. I really dig the neck on SGs, and the fret wire size.

I'd rock the hell out of that guitar in the OP.

I think you about hit the head of the nail with that description, although I don't think I'm quite sure what a weedwacker racemobile is. Sounds cool though.

Loving this guitar, have come to the conclusion that I should've been playing a shortscale all along.

Really excited about how my rig has come together, fixing the switch on my ibanez de7, and my board will be finished. Soon enough Ill be gasing for some gigging components and recording gear as the post metal/hardcore project i'm working on is starting to gain steam.

Gotcha, I call em cracker jack box cars, my wife drives a honda. I actually love the thing, outside of being too tall for it, the car never breaks down, and if it does have a problem its usually a cheap easy fix, wish I could say the same for my dodge ram.

I usually associate flip flop paint with mid 80's chevy caprice's, with a set of giant rims that are worth more than the car itself, growing up in the chicago area has exposed me to such nonsense, anyways like the paint on the ole guit fiddle, but my wifes honda will be staying stock...unless of course I get casted as paul walkers's replacement in the next fast n furious: bratislava derby or whatever they want to call it.
