Bass vi

Post by Bearstripes »

So I'm looking to sell a bunch of stuff off to finally achieve my goal of owning a bass vi!
My question is which one?
There are a few models out now and I can only buy one so I wanna now where my money would be best spent.

I ayes a pawn shop the other day and loved it however I hear the squier is almost as good after a few mods so that sounds like a better plan, and definitely at that price point it sounds like a winner.

The other option would be to mod my squier bronco into one but I'm not sure if that would be worth the time/money
I also know that there is the Eastwood and schecter a as well so I'm really just lookin for opinions on these .

Moding your Bronco will be a major PITA.

Having looked at the Pwn Shop for a long time, I went for the Squier as soon as it was announced. According to Fender's rep that the guy at my local store called, I was the first person ot order one in France, and the first one to receive one as well... What made my decision is that the VM is closer to the original VI. The Jaguar pickup in the bridge is really part of classic sound you're probably after.
I've had it around for a few months now, played it a lot, recorded a few songs with it and I have to say I'm loving it. Even the stock pickups are good. The only upgrade I have planned is the bridge. It's ok but the saddle height adjustment screws on mine have a tendency not to stay in place.

I had the squier and liked it a lot, eventually sold it because I wasn't playing it enough to justify keeping it. When I bought it there was Squier and a Pawn Shop hanging side by side, played both and couldnt see any reason why anyone would pay so much more for the pawn shop.
I don't have any experience with the Eastwood or the Schecter, but i have heard generally negative things about Eastwood and generally positive things about Schecter. I think aen and whiskeyface on here have/had the Ultra VI so maybe one of them will chime in? Also, The Cure is using the Schecter models too so that's gotta count for something (even though Robert Smith's signature model is ugly as fuk)

i have the schecter ultra vi and it is a very nice instrument. the three toaster pups sound very good and each has bucker/split/off switching. i do prefer it to the squire just because i do not really care for the curve of the squire's fretboard. the squire is much more accurate to the original bass vi toanz though. :idk:

I've got a squier, the only thing I don't love is the bridge (and the stock strings being wimpy thin). Otherwise it's a solid instrument, sounds good, loads of fun.

Someone on here said the 102 set from Circle K makes it. I plan trying them when I get one. Apparently now isn't the time though, as no friggin store around here carries them.

I've got a 105 for the low E and it's pretty much the minimum acceptable on the floppy side of things (but then I'm used to hitting the low E pretty hard so it's partly me, works fine with a lighter touch). A whole heavier set might improve things though.

Do you find yourself hitting strings that you don't mean to with a bass vi? I have a pretty heavy hand sometimes and I worry that I'll hit the E and A when I just want to hit the E. I heard its easier for guitar players to switch to bass vi than for bassists, but I need one of these so bad.

So squier with a bridge upgrade is looking like the way to go. That's what I was hoping to hear!

The schecter sounds great but I can't get past the looks of either of them. Sucks cause I hear nothing but great things about them.

Any other opinions?

I've always played guitar and bass and yeah I had this problem on the low strings, I think since it sounded low my mind was like "but this is a BASS so the strings will be THIS far apart". You get used to it though just like any other different size instrument so no worries.

Haven't had that problem but I just play it like what it is and how it feels. Left hand spacing determines where the right goes for me, always has.

And since I don't tune down and don't need the string to be super-snappy, I'm happy with even the stock strings and bridge.

The bridge is a lot better than people give it credit for assuming you know how to set up any of the other JM/Jag trems out there.

I've had mine for almost a year now and play it every damn day.

I was saving up for the PS VI when the Squiers were announced - it was a no-brainer even though I hate blocks+binding (yea, that guy) - the right control plates, not the cheap early MIM-type one piece no chrome knob/input section, and the strangle switch.

For me, I could have accepted everything else but the lack of a strangle on the PS VI. It should have been offered or as part of a push-pull pot or something.

But when I did the math, a PS VI would have been over a grand by the time I was done, and that was stupid when I'm perfectly happy with my half dozen other Squiers after setup/tweaking.

So I got a squire vi! And the middle pickup does not work.
Waiting for a new one to arrive. So far I'm not realy happy with it. I got it to intonate but the strings are shit. Once the new one comes in I'll get some better strings. I hope that will help otherwise it's going into BST.

I was pretty excited about the Squire but though its dressed to kill, the neck just doesn't deal with tuning down to drop C. :mope:

30" scale isn't going to exactly love dropping tuning.
