School me on modulation/give me Mobius ideas

Post by skullservant »

Just got a Mobius last night from our own Mr. Wes Mantooth.
I will preface this with the fact that I usually HATE modulation, but I wanted to give this a try.
I sat down with the Mobius for about an hour last night just flipping through all the presets.
I've come to the conclusion that most of them sound the same, so now I want to go through and customize all of them.
I am really stoked to have this guy though.
So, please school me on modulation.

A few questions-

1. Anyone else out there using one?
2. Any cool settings anyone has found? I'll try to post some as well.
3. Any recommendations on how to wrap my brain around modulation, especially for someone who doesn't really use it a whole lot? I mean that sounds like a dumb question, but I'm interested to hear opinions.
I guess I'll break this down:

a) Any cool phaser tricks? Usually a fan of a SUPER slow phase, but I'd like other ideas.
b) Cool flanger tricks/ways to think outside the box with flange?
c) Rotary speaker/Leslie sounds: completely new to me. How do you dudes use rotary sounds?
d) Vibe- I kind of understand how it's different from phasing, but not entirely.
e) Does anyone use any sort of Formant filters like on the Mobius? How do you go about it?
f) Harmonic vs tube vs photo trem- what is the difference?
g) Quadrature mode- it's pretty much a ring mod with a ton of options. I like this. How do y'all use ring mod effectively?
i) Any cool chorus tricks out there?

Anyways, I know that's a lot of questions, and this thread is SUPER general and I'm sorry. I edited out all the sarcasm cause I don't want to be that dude asking for help but being a butt-hat about it

I NEED YOUR HELP PLEASE GUYS

So, TL;DR: school me on vibe/rotary speaker/formant filters/flanging/chorus

Nah, you don't have to edit anything out, skully, it's just a lot to ask.

I'm sure people who use multi-effects processors are better able to multi-task that way than I am though.

EDIT: Too late, you already edited.

Yeah. I guess I was hoping for people to answer what they could, cause I know everyone here is interested in different and various forms of modulation. I know you're a flange guy, help me with flange Chankz.

Actually, I think I will break it down into threads. Cause it might open up discussion a little more!

I had Mobius for short time when it was just released. I dreamed it would substitute all my individual modulation pedals, it didn't, I sold it. My biggest problem was the flanger, but that is because I have a very particular flanging sound I'm after and it is the weirdness of HBE Frostbite. Mobius could do ok job with normal flanging with its AD/A emulation, but no weirdness was to be found.

If you want non-80's flanger I would suggest playing around with TZF, it should give something cool without cheesiness of airplane sounds.

Formant filter was one of my favorite effects in Mobius. You put it after fuzz and have robots talking. Especially good if you use gated fuzz (Unpleasant Surprise was my weapon of choice) and play short notes, so LFO doesn't make it through the whole cycle while you're holding a note.

Harmonic trem is the only trem in this world that doesn't bore the shit out of me. It sounds sweet like organic honey instead of just making sound quieter and louder. The best part of Flint too.

Destroyer is very nice, I agree. Timeline basically has all the Destroyer options in its Lo-Fi delay, main reason I could let Mobius go.

I couldn't wrap my head around Quadrature at that time, however I found a cool sound with Polytope. that can do some of what Quadrature does. You can make a vibrato with LFO controlling it's speed, so it goes from normal vibrato sound to a ring mod like on its peak and goes back to normal vibrato.

I think Mobius has shitty chorus, however there is the best autoswell in a pedal format if you into this kind of thing. Pattern tremolo is also impressive, especially with an envelope filter after it.

Awesome Shish, thanks for that. Definitely helps me think a little bit about things. I'll have to fool around with all of your suggestions!

The Vibe and rotary I loved using for very slow-paced, sparse playing, like the playing on the latest Earth albums. Gives movement to otherwise sparse guitar melodies. If you do saw or ramp wave forms on the phaser's barber setting you can get some cool sounds.

Formant sounds pretty cool with a bubbly, chaotic noisemaker and then throw some verb on it.

The detune chorus is just pretty fucking cool, loved putting it on some of my black metal riffs.

That's some good advice, Shish & Wes Mantooth. :thumb:

I've got no experience with the Mobius. I tend to use flangers in a bunch of different ways: phaser-like swoosh, vibrato, static filter, doubler, short delay. (There are a lot of non-Eighties sounds in a flanger. I think a little subtlety's the key to not sounding like the '80s.) With the Mobius, I'd guess you can do all those things and much more.

One of my problems with multi-effects units is they're capable of too many sounds and only do a few really well. (Maybe that's just me?) Although, for a person trying to find out what kind of modulation they'll really use (that's you, skully), they can make for a great learning experience.

When I got the Mobius my logic was that I really only used phaser on one song, chorus on another and so on, didn't make a lot of sense to have dedicated pedals for just little bit parts. I would definitely say I like the Faye Sing phaser more than the Mobius but the vibe, flanger and rotary sounds are killer and the harmonic trem is addicting. The Mobius has some great sounds but I just hardly use modulation, especially on bass which is what I'm playing most now.

I'll miss the Mobius but after last nights practice using the PDS with the Aqua Puss I was sold, plenty of weird noises to be had.

Yeah, and that's what I'm thinking Chanks. I guess I'm more trying to find out how people use said modulation types moreso than how they use the Mobius, to give me ideas to then take back to it, if that makes sense?
Like you said you use Flange as like a phaser/vibe/static filter/doubler/short delay, which now I want to try out to see if I can dial it in!

Wes- I'm so glad you're digging the PDS and Aqua Puss, they were a lot of fun!

I had one and for me all the Strymon pedal have been overkill. That's why I stick with the H9 instead. I can get mostly what the Mobius does, but also a million other types of sounds.

It was just too complicated for my liking and I found myself using it only for the phaser. So it had to go. That being said, I have huge ADD when it comes to pedals and my opinion is probably a lot different than others.

In a way I've given up on Strymon as I thought the Mobius and Timeline weren't really what I want and I was disappointed by the quality of sound. It's weird because I can listen to awesome demos of these things all day, but when you get one, it's never the same. lol
