I have been closely monitoring this thread and Tristan pretty much speaks the truth here.
Flangers are great and can be versatile if you find one tweakable enough. Isn't there somebody selling a bunch of flangers in the b/s/t ?
No, I don't think so.

I 'could' get huge pedalboard and cram it with all sorts of modulation goodness without making any dirt/dlay/verb compromises...But i basicly decided for myself not to overboard on gear I hardly ever put to good use, and to keep my bills/morgage/kids/future in mind when I get caught up in this whole gear obsession :)

But I really mainly dont find a lot of usefull/musical purposes in my style of playing for a bunch of envelope filtered flange shifters that destract me from what Im supposed to be doing: Coming up with dangerously wicked sounding riffs:)

Not judging anyone who's inspired by using more modulation peds than what I prefer ofcourse. If anything, I'm jealous of guys that know how to make a flange/chorus/phase effect work to their advantage, without sounding overly messy or cheesy :(

I think you def want a vibe.
The main thing it does (for me) is modulate the bottom end while allowing the rest of the tone to snarl.
Most of its intensity is controlled by how hard I dig into the strings. Soft touch you cant even hear the modulation; and really digging-in you cant miss it.
The result is this throaty, low-end throb which can be subtle movement or an intense pulse without any of the pitch shifting...unless desired.

Added bonus is it makes a useful attenuator/high pass filter as secondary functions.

Yeah I think I would totally agree...Except that I keep reading that I'd be missing out on the real essence of true univibe goodness if I dont spend twice my budget on some spot on boutique replica. So if you happen to know of a somewhat affordable alternative that'll get me close enough: I'm listening/reading:)

Edit: Did a quick google search. So far the the EQD 'the depths' looks like it fits the bill. Weird that it stayed under my radar somehow, cause. i kinda concider myself an eqd fan. Affordable hand build boutique stuff, unique and rad sounding designs at okay prices. Whats the verdict on their take of the univibe though?

IDK about the Depths, but IMO it's crucial to get a transistorized/photocell+lamp vibe. Not an op-amp based design.

Something like these:

Yeah I'm sure youre right, but like I said, the technology and materials for that type of pedal seem to be costly:s

Fwiw, The Depths is supposedly an optical vibe circuit. Small footprint, and no opamps in the audio circuit I believe. If I lurk the TGP fx emporium for a while, Im sure there'll pop one up sooner or later :idk:

Edit: I overlooked the Mojo Hand Villanova, which as far as the sales picth and controls go, looks like the exact same concept as the EQD. Its hard to tell just from the demos, so Im gonna have to give the edge to the EQD for being $35 cheaper :idk:

Don't suppose anyone a/b'd both these vibe clones yet? Anyone else care to weigh in? Im already pretty sure thatll end up buying online, sight unseen, no test drives or anything. So all the info I could get would be very welcome.

Update: I kinda sorta just closed a deal on an '80s dlxe Electric Mistress. It'll be a nightmare to rearange my pedalboard

Cool score!
In case you're still interested, about the vibes, The Depths is definitely way less phat and vibey than the Mono Vibe in my opinion, same goes for the Microvibe and the Villanova seems to be quite close to The Depths judging from the video's, I think someone on here also had one and he wasn't too enthusiastic about it either.
Those are all no go's in my book when looking for a really good vibe.
good deals with: the_brow, phantasmagorovich, alexsga, DarkAxel, goroth, The Wood Wizard, Tendollarcat, vbps, monkeydancer, intothegroove, Brobee

Yeah I've read similar accounts but haven't tried one myself.
I've tried a few lampless/transistorless designs...and seems the "chip vibes" are better at the pitchy wobble of the vibrato mode, rather than the lush pulse and throb of the chorus mode....and a vibe is all about the chorus mode. IMO obv :hobbes:

The Depths does use 4 photocells, but the similarities in the circuits appear to end there:
