Impulse bought a Big Spider
Saw skullservants Big Spider up for sale, and bought it.
Seen a ton of demos on it, but for those who've actually played one - what did you like and didn't like about it?

I've had one twice.
It's a cool tone......really raw and crazy.....but I could never make it work for me in a band........for either guitar or bass.
I didn't think they had enough output either.....but I've never heard anyone else complain about that. idk.
I now have a Boss FZ2.....which sounds similar to me and has a boost.
I like it more than the Big Spider.......but still don't use it in the band.

I love mine. I'm basically rebuilding my pedalboard to make space for it again. It sounds evil.

It's definitely the rawest octavey fuzz that I've had. I've noticed that the volume on it definitely depends on what else you are using with it. Sometimes I have the volume cranked, other times I have it barely even a quarter of the way up.
It sounds different than any sort of octave fuzz I've played- and the scoops on it via the footswitch are super gnarly in the best way. I REALLY like it on bass

I loved mine on bass, with the mids switch engaged it cuts through pretty well. Personally I found it great for slower bass lines that really need to fill out the sonic space, on faster stuff it could get a lil mushy with fingers but was better with a pick.

I am sadly too uncool to be in a band. It sounds good when I loop it and play over the top of it.

It's not the pedal, it's me. I tend to like more distortion like fuzzes.....anything too wild and I won't use it live.
I guess I'm too uncool to play any tonally extreme fuzzes.
(for recording I'll use anything)

Re: Impulse bought a Big Spider
My main concern is it sounding too shrill with my single coil guitars (that I play live, I barely use the SG)

You definitely get a pronounced octave effect with it, but my favorite sound in the world was stacking the Big Spider into a Muff

I own one, really like that its built like a tank. It's got a wide range of tones within each tone selection, i might even call it warm. Stacks really great with most pedals. Really interesting textures. I've played it with my avri Jazzy, strats, and sg to great success. I play it with my low output silvertones with no problem, plenty of output on tap. It also sounds great with my baritone, bass VI, and bass. It could have a mor pronounced octave effect, but I think it's voiced pretty great as is.

Re: Impulse bought a Big Spider
With the octave effect, how does it work with chords?
I'm still stoaked to get it regardless, just trying to figure out whether it will be more suited for live or studio use.

It gets kind of messy, but that's really the same with all other octave type fuzzes I've tried- Tone Machine, FY2, Super Fuzz.

Re: Impulse bought a Big Spider
Octave is more pronounced above the 10th fret, but it's still audible all over the fretboard. It can sound a bit splatty on chords, not that this is a bad thing. Congrats, you're gonna love it!
