I would say Sunn with Sunn if you were to ask me, but honestly, whatever sounds good to you. YOu could run a ten dollar practice amp into it, and if it sounds bomb, then who cares?

Have zero experience with neither those amps, but purely spec whise...The mesa is ten times the amp the Sunn is. Apples vs oranges, totally depends on what tone you're going for, and how much you want to spend/save...

Peavey, not Mesa.
Have used both amps, they'd both be fine, although they both sound different enough that I don't think I'd go with either sight unseen. Sunn will cost more but hold its value better, but the Peavey will (probably) live longer than you.

If you want clean and loud, the Peavey, if you want loud and... eclectic? The Sunn.

Re: Peavey Mark VI or Sunn Concert Bass head ?
I have a Sunn concert bass and just bought a Mark VIII 3 weeks ago so I can speak on this.
I love love love the Sunn. Seemingly headroom beyond what it should have. But something went wrong and it was cutting out after years of abuse. I could fix it (and will) but Peavey amps are all over every pawn shop out here so I picked one up for $130. The Mark VIII is louder and a bit more versatile so I am very happy with my grab and would now probably choose the Peavey if forced to choose because Peavey stuff never goes bad ever.

I wound up with the Sunn... mostly because of the kinship between it and the cabinet .
Distorts in a very tasty way throughout the top 3/4ths of it's volume knob range , like a pseudo-tubey grind . Quite loud but not as loud as I was expecting . Breaks up enough in the top of it's range that distortion and reverb react very differently , not bad , just different, though maybe a little flat with the vol maxed .
Still a good purchase I'd say .

I've no experience with the Peavey but have rocked a Concert Bass for years. Always get compliments from other bands, soundmen and engineers on my bass toanz and don't typically use pedals with it. I used to drag an SVT Classic around...my back and wallet are both much better off now.
Congrats on the awesome new amp
Agreed. Supposedly Sunns are actually designed to break up in a more pleasing way than typical solid state amps when pushed hard...but I had better luck taking advantage of some of the headroom and using a pedal to drive mine, rather than cranking the amp volume--especially with my 2x15.Seizurema wrote: Quite loud but not as loud as I was expecting.

Special low-frequency version.

This is very true.
Though, Concert Bass sounds a lot less like dogballs than any Mark series Peebee

Yeah honestly I have been generally unimpressed by Peavey tone wise. Very bland and boring. The Concert Bass is a tight amp, one of the better Sunn models I've played
