Best slapback pedal?

Post by neonblack »

I've been looking to get a delay just for slapback stuff. Is there a small, cheap slapback/delay pedal that people like, or should I just get the Flashback?

I should be looking at delays for this, not reverbs, right?

You know, the Aqua Puss is a better recommendation than the one I made. I change my answer to the Aqua Puss.

Yeah I like delays with dark repeats for slapback, but it depends on what kind of effect you're going for. Maybe you want some clear-repeat, mirror image type shit.

I like to use my Boss RE-20 with the treble rolled all the way back, or Memory Toy (modulation on if I want a little hazy atmosphere, modulation off if I want fatter repeats).

Well, Ive been using the delay on my BitQuest and I really like palm muting and picking the higher strings with the repeats pretty trebly for a percussive effect, but I wouldnt mind the option of some thick, dark echo. Ill check out the aqua puss.

In that case, do you think you'd benefit from having both options? The Aqua Puss is dark but there's really no way to brighten up the repeats (that I'm aware of).

I've always wanted to try a Danelectro Reel Echo. It's kind of a big but you can have clear repeats or dark, damaged repeats. Also the the delay time slider is post-buffer so you can move it with your foot if you want to glitch the fuck out.

If you're gonna consider Danelectro the Dan Echo does great slapback and has a hi-cut knob if you want darker repeats. I've never tried it with a bass though. You can usually find them for $35-$65 used and there's some cool mods you can do to it.

ohhh good call, it's also smaller and runs generally cheaper. I've heard great things about that delay pedal.

I would go Aqua Puss. I have a supa puss and it is pretty bright (I like that part) and slapback kinda sounds pretty otherworldly on some settings for being such a vanilla thing with delays.

Yes. Probably the best outside of a DMM.
Aqua Puss has a highly usable range of short delay time, and its brightly voiced repeat excel for slapback even though I prefer darker voicing. I'd still rock it without hesitation.
But my choice for go-to echo/delay should come as no shock. I have to resist shoehorning in the resulting otherworldliness of the extreme settings, but low delay & feedback settings are fun as well. It has a rep for a percussive sound, especially that first repeat. Hard to find one that's more dynamic, but it needs to be experienced firsthand.
It's not something you can absorb from a video demo.
