Re: I want a tape echo. Walk me through this one.
Sigh.
Okay, yeah. I've owned a lot of delays over the years, but never a DMM. Or an el cap. I used to have an original DM-2, and an MXR analog delay (the huge green one), and the way the repeats melt into the background was great. I feel my fascination with tape is only because it's foreign. So, probably gonna use the money to do what Sonidero suggested. Those two plus the DDD will probably cover any delay I want to use. The DDD does have a wonderful character, but I miss that weird ear pleasing quality of a fucked up analog delay.
Then again, might just drop all my money on fuzz because fuck it. Thanks for the help, folks.

It's way good. It was at a local GC, so I went for the immediately in my hands for not too bad over getting the full on 5 knob. The repeats melt away real nice. There were a lot of moments when testing it out when I and PetZounds both looked at each other and just said "Man, that sounds really good."

Re: I want a tape echo. Walk me through this one.
I replaced a DL4 with a Timeline but it's used in conjunction with a slew of different delays, very complimentary like you noted. The TL is great, esp the looper, and having all those options is very cool.rustywire wrote:Yeah, headroom is not something of a premium in stock DMM units...but using a buffered pedal in front...especially an eq can be night/day.
As far as El Cap/DMM threads go...I've seen many more instances of skully's story than anyone claiming to have replaced their DMM with an El Cap without sooner or later changing their mind. In general I feel like they would be more complimentary of each other instead of adversarial. Strymon fans tend to be overzealous, though.
There's no shortage of gear forum guys who claim to have "replaced all their delays with a Timeline" but cant seem to give a straight answer of "how to make it a (big box) DMM" or indicate they know how a DMM is *supposed to* sound...or if they even like the sound to begin with. The big box versions are the *anti-digital* but from every secondhand testimony I've read (like DarkAxel's) plus using my own ears @youtube...the DMM XO is much brighter and even *more digital* in its behavior...and perhaps that's the reference point the Timeline faithful are attempting to match.
That said, I also had a Big box DMM (that I regrettably sold) and the TL couldn't replicate that sound exactly, just not possible in my experience. I've never owned any delay that could honestly. Had the XO as well and thought it sucked balls when compared to the original. Def brighter and noisier but in a bad way. Sold that one with zero regret and pretty much gave up on the newer XO designs after that and a major Polychoros XO letdown.
But yeah, now I want an old Big Box again. Damn it.

Re: I want a tape echo. Walk me through this one.
Great score Donny. I still want a blueface DMM...and this thread (among others) made me talk myself into getting another DMM.
2 are actually en route, heh.
"The repeats melt away" Is an apt description in more than one way...both in terms of amplitude+duration and fidelity. I cant gush enough about that gradual taper and sound-on-sound behavior when the FEEDBACK knob is set on the cusp of oscillation (usually pointing around 12o'clock). Open, sustained notes and chords (especially with bends) take on synth pad characteristics, even without the modulation...and they just drift away into the murk
Schnikes...your experience sounds far from unique. The DMM on the other hand....sounds far out unique...even with there being subtle variation between models made within hours of each other. I see mention that the Timeline gets a "pretty close sound of the Chorus mode" ...but not the melt-away/burnt-out behavior and feel...or the awesomeness that is the Vibrato mode. I cant speak from firsthand comparison but based on what I've heard in demos...it definitely sounds more like the XO version than the big boxes.
