I can't do a full top 10 of everything, but I recently figured out my possible top 10 of non-heavy albums.

Balmorhea - Constellations
Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here
Les Discrets - Septembre et Ses Dernières Pensées
The Dirty Three - Ocean Songs
This Will Destroy You - Young Mountain
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
Ulver - Perdition City
Mogwai - Mr. Beast
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Imogen Heap - Speak for Yourself

Stooges - Funhouse
Black Flag - Damaged
Hammerhead - Into the Vortex
Sonny Sharrock - Ask the Ages

Also, I want to have listening party with LaoWiz.
Fuck yea, love those! Have you listened to Todd. A guy I kinda knew played bass in the early 90's scene in austin. Then went to Hammerhead. Later he formed Todd. First two records are amazing!

1. Kishi Bashi-151a: Discovered his stuff via The Needle Drop. Watching his performance on tiny desk sealed the deal as far as doing headfirst into his discography. The man does some insane looping without getting gimmicky.

2. Flying Lotus-Cosmogramma: Forever and always. This album redefined songwriting for me and what a song could look like, and did things with music I didn't think would work. It also introduced me to instrumental beat music, and sent me head first into my obsession with all things DJ Shadow, Dilla and Chemical Brothers.

3. My Chemical Romance-The Black Parade: IM NOT GREENFUZ I SWEAR! Honestly, I know this group gets hate here, and people have verrrrrrrrrrry legitimate reasons not to like this band, but damn it all this album is amazing. The production, the theatrics, the TOANS. Guitar wise, MCR and this album in particular have been a pretty big influence. Especially with recording "SUMMER", a lot of my thought process took pages from the way this album carries itself, only kookier. I couldn't be hat gloomy even if I tried.

4. Tobacco-Ultima II Massage: My favorite of Tobacco's solo work so far. It's like he took the natural grime that was there in the first two records and turnt it up just a bit. Jus he right amour of grime to make this thing amazing.

5. Black Moth Super Rainbow-Dandelion Gum: A natural globbing in from being exposed to Tobacco's solo stuff. Like it more than any of the other BMSR albums. The other ones seem kinda meeeeeeeh. But this one stands out for some reason.

6. Wu-Tang Clan-Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers: I've been holding off getting this album for a while, no particular reason other than general laziness. Wasn't sure if I'd really like I that much, but as it turns out I really dig it. Them Kung fu samples tho.

7. The Mars Volta-The Bedlam in Goliath+live bootleg: An album I picked up years ago and a bootleg I got semi recently. The show is from the Bedlam tour cycle, which in my opinion is the best line up the Volta had. It's really cool to listen to this and hear them translate the polished surface of the album to a live setting. The bootleg is also straight up guitar porn if your a fan of Omar's playing. Soooo many solos.

8. Anamanaguchi-Frug 4 Lyfe: A collection of the summer singles. Mess, Mermaid, and of course, Airbrushed. My first exposure to chip tune I had. So much nostalgia. Picked up Endless Fantasy and heard their latest song, dig it. Makes me happy to see they haven't changed much, only gotten better.

9. Captain Murphy-Duality: Flylo's rap alias. Lyrically, this album is okkkk. Like, none of it is super deep other than Killing Joke, but he rhymes are really just one half of a bigger picture created with the production. Both elements work together better than they do separately.

10. Panic! at the Disco-A Fever you can't sweat out: another album that will probably get me scoffed at, but I really dig it. For an album released on a fairly mainstream label, this manages to pull of a lot of unusual instrumentation. This album is another that always ends up on this list cause I always find myself going back to it.

I realized earlier that I posted an overall top 10 but my current rotation top 10 is way different.

1. Young Widows - Easy Pain
So amazing. Dark, noisy, and heavy as shit. This album is making me want to write some simpler, heavier stuff.

2. Dope Body - Nupping
Im surprised this band doesnt get a little more love around here. Really effects-heavy, interesting punk type stuff.

3. Tera Melos - X'ed Out
Not much needs to be said about this one.

4. Bars of Gold - Wheels
Awesome upbeat indie rock stuff. The singer of Bear Vs Shark, one of my all time favorites.

5. Greys - If Anything
Fugazi-esque post hardcore. Really energetic and fun to listen to.

6. Ought - More Than Any Other Day
Talking Heads meets Pixies meets Violent Femmes meets Sonic Youth meets Fugazi.

7. Pissed Jeans - Honeys
Angry noisy punk rock. I love the bass tones on this album.

8. Big Ups - Eighteen Hours of Static
Jesus Lizard/Fugazi inspired post hardcore

9. White Lung - Deep Fantasy
Awesome, energetic female fronted punk. Reminds me of older AFI and I mean that in a good way.

10. Savages - Silence Yourself
Never gave this a proper listen until recently, and now I can't stop listening to it. Just amazing.

Honorable Mention: Young Widows/Helms Alee Split

Really great songs from both bands on here. Young Widows' slowest/quietest/Black Sabbathest songs, and some heavy jams from Helms Alee.

Top 10 albums as of right now:

Mingus Ah Um - Charles Mingus
Labyrinth Constellation - Artificial Brain
Ancient Call - Tengger Cavalry
Colored Sands - Gorguts
The Giant - Ahab
Moanin' - Art Blakey
La Fin Absolue du Monde - Enabler
Splinters - Vallenfyre
Selenelion - Vaura
We Insist! - Max Roach

In fact, that's pretty much the only music I'm listening to at the moment.

I've also been listening to X'ed Out a few times to try and "get" it, but man... I think I really dislike Tera Melos. Plenty of good dudes round here love em (see above!) but ah... meh...
To be fair I don't really like any other bands who play in that style either, but I'm trying to broaden my palette from jazz/metal to other stuff.
I'm failing. Though I do like shoe gaze when it's filtered through a metal lens - Vaura, Lantlôs, Alcest... but I still haven't learned to like the source material for all of this stuff.

edit: that paragraph above is completely disjointed. Sorry.

Maybe try Patagonian Rats. X'ed out is good, but Rats is my favorite. I do agree that a lot of "math rock" type stuff can be pretty exhausting to listen to, in the same way that some extreme metal and stuff can tire you out.

If you want to start with some stuff thats a little easier to digest, I suggest No Kill No Beep Beep by Q And Not U, or the first two Maps & Atlases EP's (Trees Swallow Houses / You and Me and the Mountain). The Martial Arts by Cinemechanica or Dirty Versions by We Versus the Shark are also both pretty great.
Brb, starting a math rock thread.

Hmm, as of Today TODAY? Much different;

Dead Rider - Chills on Glass - weirdo noise rock, ex US Maple
Brown Sugar - Sings of Birds and Racism - noisy punk rock
Army of the Pharaohs - In Death Reborn - Wu Tang reborn at points
Exhumed - Slaughtercult - found this online, such killer death metal
Impalers - self titled - little Motorheady, lot of fast crustiness
Drug Problem - self titled - sicko power violence
Gridlink - Longhena - awesome techy grind, with karaoke version at end! Sweet to scream to.
Amarok / Enth - split LP - funeral doom heaviness
Leather - Easy - more noisy punk rock
Lifes / Short Walk split 7" - killer Milwaukee power violence on both sides.
OFF! - any - I'm a sucker for old dudes doing retro hardcore

Honorable mention
King Snake Roost - Things That Play Themselves - one of the best AmRep LP's. Got to hang out with these guys when they were recording it. All the Aussie bancs on AmRep were cool dudes (Cosmic Psychos and Lubricated Goat too). Busted this out after mention of Hammerhead, and it's just as good as their best.

I would also recommend listening to Drugs to the Dear Youth. Thats ties with Patagonian Rats as my favorite Tera Melos release.

Also those Maps & Atlases EPs rule so hard.

Ok, I'll take your advice duders! :thumb:

I think the mixture of rampant happy happy and kinda, depressed teenager sadness was an uncomfortable mix. Again, I like math rock when it gets into hardcore and metal territory, and less so when it's indie. I'm starting to feel like I'm pigeon-holing myself here...
I like Minus the Bear, but I don't know how stylistically similar they are for someone who's into that genre? I think they're kinda in the same boat. :idk:

But thanks for the advice - I'm going to punch through it!

You may not dig maps n atlases then. And if you like harder kind of math rock id stick with tera melos' earlier material like the untitled lp.
