Rat pedals cutting out.

Post by Hacken »

Got this cheap chinese Rat pedal from E-bay and while playing it last night i noticed the sound saging och cutting out on the attack of a note when playing with the gain up. I have had a Proco Rat 2 and another Rat clone and they all did the same.
This happend with my EMG equipped guitar now and my Dimarzio Super Dirtortion equipped guitar before, with lower output pickups it isnt as prominent.
I tried stacking a Super Fuzz before the Rat (awesome ripping sound!!) and the sag/volume drop/cutting out stopped so i figure it´s a problem with the impedance from the pickups rather then the output. Would a bufferd signal going to the Rat help?

If you have a buffered pedal, try it out.

A similar problem happened to me, but with the pharaoh fuzz. I never figured out what it was. I got Mark (BAT) to check my unit, and even tried another pharaoh and had the same problem. I thought it was the power in my house/old bedroom...but it also happened on stage and at jam. It went away, but I'm not sure what the problem was, and why it was only the pharaoh. Switching to lower output pickups definitely helped though.

Has this problem occurred at more than one space? Are you using a isolated power supply? What about your cables?

That's just how Rats are (especially the Turbo Rat) with hotter pickups, lower the distortion knob and increase the level knob to avoid the sag, lowering the filter knob also helps.

That said I actually love that sagging sound when slamming the low E  Sounds like a Fender about to explode

I´ve googled it and apparently this is a common thing.
I tried some other cables and with a battery and its still the same deal with the EMGs.
Actually no biggie since the EMGs are gonna be changed to something passive, but i just want to know if somebody else experience the same thing with high output HB and Rats.

Mine does the same thing!
My pickups aren't super hot either. I mainly use Teles, Jazzmasters, or something with low output humbuckers
I thought I had a bad input cap or something.
I love it though! It's great to kick on for some "end of the world/blown speaker" parts.

I remember reading the same complaint about the Earthbound Iron Pig when it was released. People downtuning experienced it cutting out on low notes. Like mentioned, it's apparently very common with RATS but my Iron Pig never behaves like that and I use a wide variety of singles and coil tapped HBs. At least I haven't noticed it yet.
