Mid scoops - um, wot? The ice cream and/or pedal parlour.
Pedals like the BeeBaa, Super Fuzz and to a lesser extent the Muff... how do you guys use the mid scoop? In any of the demos I've heard it just kinda sucks the life out of the pedal, and I can't imagine how that would work in a band situation.
What am I missing here? Yeah, I get the argument "just turn it up", but then to get the mids back up to a level where you're going to be heard you've got the treble shitting on the cymbals, and the bass is at levels where the bassist is starting to hate you a lot.
Eg: 30-35 seconds in to this clip

Re: Mid scoops - um, wot?
Scooping mids just sucks in a live mix. So does cranking mids. In fact it seems like extremes suck with frequencies all together. I want my low end to disembowel as much as the next guy here but we should all agree not to stomp over each other's sonic space.
Not gonna lie tho, I do have fun solo with the scooped modes on Superfuzzes

I like to think of scooped fuzzes as creating negative space. Just don't make it extreme and crank bass and treble. And I'll agree most bands who try to use a scooped sound fucking ruin the entire mix. But if you use it right you can fall back into the mix to help another instrument shine through or create a darker atmosphere.

I was hoping this thread was gonna be about an ice cream parlor/pedal shoppe.

Slayer is a perfect example of the guitarists scoop their mids, they boost the kick drum, and the bass is basically inaudible.D.o.S. wrote:Ask slayer?

I use mid scoop settings when I'm just messing around at home. Not much live application in my experience.

Exactly. Nothing in a Slayer mix to stomp on those scooped guitars tones.bigchiefbc wrote:Slayer is a perfect example of the guitarists scoop their mids, they boost the kick drum, and the bass is basically inaudible.D.o.S. wrote:Ask slayer?

Scooped mids can sound pretty good if you're just playing clean. This Town Needs Guns, it sounds like they scoop their mids but their mix sounds A-OK.
And as far as using a dirt that has the scoop, a boost after the effect seems to be the way to go.

Yep. Try Ryan's slayer setting in the Elements thread. The mid is maxed and it NAILS the Slayer tone. Mid. Scoopy mids has only worked for Dimebag.Derelict78 wrote:But Kerry eq's with a frowny face not a smiley face.

I like what you're saying PP about falling back in the mix.
Chanks you're welcome to talk about ice cream.

Re: Mid scoops - um, wot?
On the Slayer albums that people actually listen to?
I don't know if I believe you. I mean, I do believe you, but I don't hear mids in any classic thrash band.
edit: Just went back. I'm totes wrong. Don't drink and scoop, kids.

I actually really like the way John Petrucci's guitar sounds and he's pretty scoopy, though the way he does it retains a lot of the upper mids and he pulls his low end pretty far down. Not entirely sure how it sounds live though. I've heard that it can be hit or miss on whether you can hear John Myung.
