Mr. Black Reverbs - Are they an wizard???

Post by Eivind August »

So, I'm looking for a new reverb. Been through the TCs, from the mini to the nova, but they just aren't my style. Thought I had landed on the Blackout Cadavernous, when suddenly, using my google fu, I came upon the sacred land of Mr. Black. "Jack Deville," I thought to myself, "I've heard his name before. Pedal guru, if I'm not mistaken. But what is this Mr. Black stuff?" I ventured further into the realms of this undiscovered terrain, and found myself facing the Eterna. And holy shit u gaise, the shimmer can be annoying, but man does it sound beautiful. And the Supermoon as well.

When I use reverb, I want to drown my guitar in a magical space river or plunge it into another dimension. The Cadavernous can obviously do that, but these Mr. Black pedals... They're MXR-sized as well, so I wouldn't have to saw my Raptio in half.

tl;dr: Anybody tried them? Any tales of terror, issues with build quality, cheapness of sound etc.? Or are they just as good as they seem?

I have a Supermoon and absolutely love it. The basic reverb sound goes from subtle to cavernous and the sound quality is top notch. I really like the haunting trails "gimmick" and it sounds amazing in the right context. Plus the small size means you'll have room on your board to stack another, more versitle reverb (I'm thinking abouut getting an EQD Dispatch Master to put in-between my delay and Supermoon) with it for unlimited ambient adventures. Excellent build quality also.

Supermoon is sweet. I love mine. Being able to modulate your verb makes for a lot of cool possibilities.

If you're looking for something more versatile, have you checked on the Red Panda Context? It can cover a ton of ground and keep a small footprint on your board. You've also got a delay option on it, which is useful!
Happy Dealings with: julius_deane, HeavyXIII, RobFossil, letsgocoyote, darkfields, colin, MEC, sanfordandsonny, delaydecay, aedes, leastwise, foomanfat...

I've always wanted to try the Mr. Black stuff but once I got a Cadavernous I haven't been able to peel myself away from it for anything else. Honestly... The SWELL feature on the Cadavernous is what really sold me. I just love the shit out of it. It's great for adding some subtle and overt textures and it's awesome at creating some between song passages. Lots of fun to loop it, too.

And even though I'm not crazy about some of the playing I think the Prymaxe Vintage video for the Cadavernous does it some justice.

You have A LOT of control over the Cadavernous. The only reverb that I could ALMOST see myself sort of lusting over aside from this is the Walrus Audio Descent and the EQD Ghost Echo/Dispatch Master. In fact... I should probably just get a Dispatch Master no matter what. Probably time to stop fucking around on that one.

Have a Supermoon Chrome and it sounds tight. Only bummer is that the tails don't decay naturally when you switch it off.

yes, this is the only downside of the chrome. more delays and reverbs should have a trails option.

Thanks for the feedback, dudes. Much love for the Supermoon, as I thought. Looked at the chrome, close to pulling the trigger. The Eterna intrigues me, though. I can't see myself using the shimmer alot, but then again I was mesmerized when I first heard it - reminds me of some of Susumu Hirasawas sounds (if you haven't heard him, check him out ASAP. I can wait.)

The Cadavernous is indeed sweet, as mentioned I was close to buying it when this Mr Black stuff popped up from nowhere. Tweaking is cool and all, but when it comes to reverb I tend to set and forget. And it's more expensive and will push the Raptio over to my "Nintendo-board". Blackout seems like cool guys and a nice company, which I for some reason always take into account when buying. Then again, Jack Deville seems like a dude as well. Desicions, desukonbabaroopachuck rlfg5p5gjfpgevdzjv45pvvmfdvoe

The Neunaber Stereo Wet and Iron Ether Nimbus were my two favorites for when I wanted to
drown my guitar in a magical space river or plunge it into another dimension.

I'm a big set it and forget it kind of reverb guy too and I love my EQD Ghost Echo for some more standard reverb and the Dispatch Master for the crazy ambient stuff.
I've got the DM set with max reverb, max repeats, and a very short delay. It actually gets ridiculous to a point of overdriving my amp.
I'm very intrigued by the Mr. Black stuff, although I really don't like any of the sounds I've heard from the Eterna.

I think I'll make the choice tonight, order tomorrow. I've spent too much time the last couple of days watching demos and thinking, when I should actually have been playing. All I need is a big, spacey sounding reverb.

So, the options I'm considering are the Supermoon Chrome, Blackout Cadavernous, the Iron Ether Nimbus or the Eterna Gold (I do agree that the sounds might not be usable for everything, still it intrigues me).

I really like the demos I've watched. I like the smaller footprint and simple controls. I'm using a cathedral for all my pedal reverb and I'd like to try something different down the line.
