a small spoon works good too. put a paper towel or something underneath it if you don't want to scratch your pedal or device.

the curved nature of the spoon keeps it from bending the pot shaft.

$8.50, worked as a tech at a Sam Ash for a while. Had this in my toolbox and never had any problems with it.
For a cheaper alternative to that fifty dollar fucker.
Cheaper than a $50 "Knob Puller", eh?

I hear you can make a cheap knob puller with a microwaved banana peel and a sock.

shoelace around the base of the knob...
gently pull upward...
rocking motion, as necessary...

Almost certainly. Just like playing guitar, why use your fingers to do the work when you can spend excessive amounts of money on stuff that will do it for you? Only suckers use their fingers.

Car shops have those lil plastic prybars for trim if you just have to have a tool, or use a pick...

I use the handles of 2 soup spoons. One either side and lever up gently. Works well. Even pries up those annoying EHX or PROCO rat knobs without bad language.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I tried an adaption of the "piece of cloth" technique, by using the slightly elasticated, open end of sock instead. That did the job.

p.s. it was a freshly laundered sock.

Very strategically used the word fucker in place of knob puller for this very reason.
