ways to remove knobs off pots ?

Post by Ro_S »

I'd like to swap around the control knobs on some of my pedals.

Many of the knobs don't have set-screws though, so what are the best ways to remove the other type of knobs? (without risking damaging the pedal, the pots or the knobs)

Also, will knobs of teh types both with and without set-screws universally fit onto the pot shafts of other, different pedals?

thanks

I've had the best luck with a thin shoestring or piece of strong twine. Wrap it around under the knob, pull up on each side evenly, and pop it off. Sometimes they come right off with a little wiggling and other times it's takes some effort.

Fair warning, I've fucked a couple guitar pots up over the years removing stubborn knobs so go easy.

And knobs usually come in smaller metric sizes or standard US so fit depends on the pot shaft used.

If there's no set screw, then it's just held on by friction. I've usually had the best luck with a small chisel or putty knife or something like that, with a little bit of a wedge to it. Just slip it under one side, gently lever it up a little bit, then move it to another side and just keep doing that bit by bit until it pops off.

this is the method I've always used. Find the smallest flathead screwdriver you have and work it slowly.

Find yourself a phillips head screwdriver. seriously.

Go to the nearest door. remove the metal plate that is on the door jamb, that the door knob clicks into when closed. seriously.

cover said metal plate with tape, stickers or something so it doesn't scratch the pedal or guitar. Or, just put a couple pieces of paper on the item.

stick the curved end of the plate under the knob, and carefully pry up a smallllllll amount at a time, turning the knob as you go.

works every time.
Got my A machines on the table, got my B machines in a drawer.

Alternatively, in step one, you can get a flathead screwdriver and skip all the other steps. :p

Grab a rag and wrap the edge under it and yank away. I guess it's basically the same as a piece of string, just like the amount of even pressure around all sides instead of just the side where the ends are.

$8.50, worked as a tech at a Sam Ash for a while. Had this in my toolbox and never had any problems with it.
For a cheaper alternative to that fifty dollar fucker.
