You clearly haven't heard Steve Howe's acoustic cover of Drink Deep.

They're an odd band in terms of how people take to them. People either find them frightfully dull, or they are the greatest band in the universe. There's almost no middle-ground. I'm in the latter camp. Yet, I have friends who dig alot of DC hardcore, they like Rites and Embrace but just think Fugazi are tedious and boring. It's bananas.
I just can't get enough of those grooves, personally. Lally and Canty are the best rhythm section in rock music. Well, at least to my listening holes. There's little music that I have heard that resonates with me more than Fugazi.

Possibly -- I adore sweet Jane, as well as every song on Kill Taker -- I wouldn't have picked Smallpox Champion as a sampler though.Ugly Nora wrote:While I am legally deaf in both ears, I do think my judgement is correct on this one. But lets agree to disagree.

I love Sweet Jane too. I just don't think it is a good song in the context of the Velvet Underground if that makes sense. I really don't like that whole Loaded album. Basically I like Sweet Jane, Rock and Roll, and Oh Sweet Nuthin (awesome tune). But as a whole, that album is way more commerical and tame and bland compared to their previous 3. I do love the bonus tracks on Loaded though from the Peel Slowly and See boxset I have. I think the bonus tracks as a whole are stronger than the regular album. I always wondered how that managed to happen.
Kill Taker -- Well you said your first experience with Fugazi was Kill Taker, so it is natural that may be your favorite, or at least one that you like. I was listening to Fugazi since they released 13 Songs, so that was my frame of reference. And so every album they put out after that I naturally would compare to that. When Kill Take came out I really didn't like it. And based on Small Pox champion, I still don't. What song would you recommend to change my mind?
It is similar to how I felt about T.Rex. Sure, growing up I knew the song Bang a Gong. But my real first exposure to them was when I was in college working in a cd store and bought their first 2 albums when they were called Tyrannosaurus Rex and all they were were acoustic guitar, bongos, and vocals. Completely different than the glammed out stuff that would later follow. When I bought Electric Warrior and The Slider I hated them because it was so different from what I was accustomed to. Of course now, I love both those albums and the rest of their catalog as well.
In conclusion, T.Rex rules.

Agreed on T. Rex.
As for IotKT, I actually listened to it earlier today to try and find a good cut from it -- I still haven't figured out if there was a single cut I'd grab from that. Public Witness Program, maybe? Great Cop? I don't know, I usually just listen to it start to finish.

Go find the Instrument DVD. Fugazi was a live band. Some of the records were great, but they really were just snapshots of moments in time, underexposed polaroids of a band that was reinterpreting their entire catalog every night on stage.Ugly Nora wrote: What song would you recommend to change my mind?
If you don't have a spare Tardis, the best you can do is sit down with the live material. Lots of boots, legal or otherwise, floating around but it doesn't get much better than Instrument. If that doesn't grab you by the neck, then you're probably not a Fugazi fan. And that's fine.ish.

I am probably not a fugazi fan? Why have I been listening to them for 25 years then? To look cool?

Re: Fugazi is the best band
Pretty much I agree with this.. I got a copy of the first EP when I was 13, I loved the shit out of that and is still one of those things I never get sick of, all their other material I tolerate [still I like this better than lots of other music], also... I like Minor Threat more than Fugazi on the wholeUgly Nora wrote:I love Sweet Jane too. I just don't think it is a good song in the context of the Velvet Underground if that makes sense. Five pages in, just checking in to see we still agree that Fugazi is the best band? Yes? Good.
