Ridiculous bass/guitar doubleneck dronemonster project

Post by Obulus »

Monster post incoming!
Ever since AxAxSxS posted his doubleneck in the let's see your guitar thread, I started looking up cheap Chinese bass/guitar doublenecks and bumped into this ridiculously cheap Boris-esque thing (360 dollars on AliExpress).
Image

It immediately started imagining wacky mods I could do to it to turn it into some kind of drone allrounder. My imagination got the better of my financial responsibility and I ordered one yesterday. Here's what I'm planning.
Guitar side:
- High output rail humbucker in the bridge (Probably GFS or Artec)
- Sustainiac in the neck to get some drones going
- Master volume and some filter options on a 4 or 5-way blade switch (filter bypass, high-pass, low-pass, high and low pass at the same time)
- Maybe I'll stuff a piezo under the bridge too

Bass side:
- Probably install blade humbuckers similar to the guitar bridge humbucker
- Maybe just wire them in series or parallel all the time to keep things "simple"
- Volume and tone filters the same as guitar side.
- MAYBE replace one of the humbuckers with a lo-fi microphone from a telephone or something (got this idea off weed_killer's tele if I remember correctly). But I will see how I like the sound of the pickups first as the neck position is very close to the neck and the bridge position is very close to the bridge, so maybe I need both of them to get a good sound going.

Onboard drone-synth:
- Dual oscillator (2 frequency controls and 1 volume) with a filter knob based on the Big Muff tone control. I will build the oscillators such that there will be no high-end squeal but only low-end rumble.
- White/pink noise generator (only volume control)
- OR another idea is to try and squeeze a Skychord Deses Parva in there but I'll prototype my own drone-box first to see how that turns out
- Stacking as much of the controls as possible in concentric pots (I will also do the guitar and bass volumes in a concentric pot) to save space/fit them in the existing holes.

- Power supply for the drone-synth and Sustainiac will be from my board through a 4-pin XLR output(according to the Sustainiac info site the ground of the Sustainiac and the signal ground of the guitar need separate paths to the power supply so a TRS won't work).
- 4-pin XLR will be the main and standard guitar output, with separate outputs for bass and drone-synth. So I'll use three outputs but I will install switches to switch bass to guitar side and the drone-synth to guitar or bass side to be able to use everything with 1 or 2 outputs if necessary. I'm not going to run three amps all the time.
- I ordered one without finish as I will be applying a wacky finish to go with all of this. Probably going to do a fabric finish (wallpaper) on the front and leave the back bare wood with a faux binding between them. I asked chrome hardware instead of black too since I think black will not work with the ridiculous finish I have in mind.
- I already came up with a name for it too: Onamazu, after a Japanese legend of a giant catfish that causes earthquakes. Which is exactly the sound I'm after with this thing.

I'm open to any suggestions! Since this project has gotten this elaborate, I might as well throw some other mods in!

As if this couldn't get any more over the top, sustainiac works on bass too :poke: :omg:

Hahaha, I know! But it takes a lot of space PCB and controls-wise. Also $$$$, trying to keep it more or less cheap (aiming for +- 600 euros total, but I won't make that if the customs decide to full charge me for everything)

Will a Sustainiac work in the neck position? I thought they had to be close to the bridge.

I think neck position is recommended but bridge position can work on some guitars. I really want one, seems like so much fun.

Yeah, they recommend neck position and a minimum distance between the sustainiac and bridge pickup. They have quite some directions about placement of the sustainer and the controls of it, so I hope it will work in this guitar!

Ordered parts for the guitar electronics and drone-box. Still have to order the pickups and the sustainiac and then I'm all set (except for finishing, still have to decide).

ALSO, after some digging around, I've found out that people have been making DIY sustainers and some tutorials about it. I'm still going to use a Sustainiac for the guitar side I think, since a lot of the DIY projects seem to have problems on the higher strings because these are thinner. But since these DIY sustainers are pretty cheap to make, I may try and make one for the bass side. Here's the link to some thread I found that gives a pretty good explanation of how to DIY one, if someone's interested: http://www.projectguitar.com/topic/1698 ... -tutorial/

So after a lot of hassle with the customs, I finally got the doubleneck in the mail this week. The company selling it marked the guitar's value as $30, which landed me a 50 euros fine on top of the regular customs fee. Ended up paying 150 euros to the customs in total. I was not really amused by that, since I hadn't asked the seller to understate the value, but whatever, it's here now I guess.

First thing I noticed is that the guitar part has a tremolo, which was not really clear from pictures and description. I love to abuse trems, so that's a good thing. It looks like a Steinberger R-Trem, which is a floating system. For now I have no clue on how to keep the guitar in tune though with the tremolo unlocked (luckily, it can be locked, should I really be unable to figure out how to use it effectively). I'm definitely going to play it some more before hacking it apart, to see if I can make it work. I'll also read up on those Steinberger R-trems to see if I can find any good hints (or if any of you guys has ever used one, tips are welcome). The bass side keeps in tune pretty well. One tuner doesn't move too swiftly though, so I may have a look at that too.

Anyway, I played it for a couple of hours now and I must say I really love what you can do with it. Just turning both sides on while playing through a lot of dirt sounds awesome because of the sympathetic ringing of the strings. Or for instance turning of the guitar side but playing it such that you only hear the sympathetic ringing of the bass side. Awesome sounds to be had for sure.

A stripping related question for you guys, as I'm planning to refinish it. What is the best way to strip it? I tried chemical the last time but didn't like it very much, so I'm leaning towards sanding. I'm trying to avoid sanding it by hand so I was wondering if one of these guys could do a good job at it:

The "official" way to set up the R-trem is to lock the trem, tune up, then unlock and adjust the large tension knob until you are back in tune. From there you should be able to lock and unlock without throwing out your tuning at all.
The problem with the R-trems (both the steinberger and copies) seems to be that the posts the trem pivots on are made of too soft of a metal and will eventually bend over with heavy use. I haven't had this happen myself on my Spirit, but I haven't had it that long. There's a guy on some Steinberger forum who makes and sells replacements made of harder steel.
As for the stripping, I think a heat gun is the best way to go. I tried to sand a poly finish guitar with a belt sander and even that was a pain, I think that little oscillating one will take forever.

heat gun and a scraper tool of some sort will be the way to go. You'll still have to do some sanding, but nothing in the same league as doing it all by hand.

Definitely heat! I'll be doing it next week - My girlfriend has been chasing the Thurston Moore jazzmaster but without the price tag. Looks like I'm refinishing a guitar in green! YEEHAAW

Okay, that's pretty convincing in favor of heat, so I'll try and track down a heat gun. Thanks guys! Just wondering though, I am going to strip an Epi SG too soon. Is it okay to use heat on the neck too or is sanding the only option then? Because I can imagine it would warp the neck using heat?

And Trace, thanks for the insight about the R-trem! I hope I have some time tomorrow to try and set it up. Do you like the trem yourself? Does your guitar stay in tune well?

I really want to build a drone synth into a bass or guitar now...
