Downsizing from Twin - I have two trade offers. Help me out?
I'm moving into an apartment in a new city in the next month, and I'm having to get rid of my Red Knob Twin and downsize. However, I'm looking at starting a new band once I'm settled, so I'll need something that can hold its own on a stage with a few pedals (good headroom is a winner for me)
I've been offered two trades - one friend of mine has a Red Knob Super 60. He assures it's plenty loud enough to still gig with, and it IS pretty cool... but for a straight trade, I can't help but feel the values are a little off.
Someone else has offered me a mint condition FSR Blues Junior in green tolex with a Cannabis Rex speaker... and it looks the absolute business. The only thing is, can it do a loud(ish) clean for gigging, and can it handle a few pretty loud pedals without too much complaint (I have a Death By Audio Octave Clang clone and a DAM Meathead clone).
I know the Blues Junior is pretty fair in terms of a trade, so if it ticks the boxes, I'm down.

I think they're both not really a fair trade, the Twin is worth more, get them to lay down some cash with it.
As for the volume, it depends on your band and your drummer but I've been playing with a pretty heavy handed drummer before and the occasional Blues Junior in the rehearsal room was enough for me then and there so unless you're talking ILF Doom like volume levels you should be okay with it I think.

Blues Jr can't really do loud cleans. It can get loud, but it doesn't have too much headroom.
My guitarist had trouble keeping his clean with only a three piece on stage. He had to upgrade to a Hot Rod Deluxe to compete. Definitely not good for unmic'd shows.
But it also depends on how loud you'll play, if the venue will mic you, etc.
YMMV

Huh, apparently I know shit about these amps, I thought he was talking about a Hot Rod Deluxe type amp, only the vintage styled one?
Oh, right, now I see, Blues Junior, of course, that's definitely a no go, really not a fair offer too pricewise I'd say.

Re: Downsizing from Twin - I have two trade offers. Help me
I figured that with being mic-ed.
I've looked into the Blues Junior and it's one of the limited edition ones... I'm pretty tempted since at 2nd hand value, a Red Knob and that are pretty level. I've heard it's good with pedals - although I'm playing with some pretty angry ones.
The reason I ended up with a Twin was because the drummer in my last band was loud as hell... but 'things' happened and the band split and we're not on speaking terms etc... ~*~band drama~*~
For a little while, I can see it being good. Can you use an extension cab with 'em?

I don't think the Blues Jr's have an ext out. Just one main speaker jack.
At least the older ones didn't. Not sure about the newer ones.

Well, you know, do whatever you think, I think you're going to lose money on it because in practice Fender Limited Editions don't bring more money second hand and the Red Knob Twin is way more sought after than the thing you're trading it for.
Also, even if possible an extra speaker cab isn't going to do much for your clean headroom, definitely not with the Blues Junior (now I understand that's the one we're talking about here).
If you want a current Fender just get a Blues Deluxe or something instead, they're not that awesome (neither is the Blues Junior) but they're decent and at least they're loud enough.
My 2 cents though…

Straight Trade for both is a no go. You should get additional money - no matter which Trade You do.
I like the Super 60 (i use the rack Version): reliable, Loves pedals, loud, plenty of all frequencies with a very good eq. Obviously Not hip.

Re: Downsizing from Twin - I have two trade offers. Help me
The plot thickens. Someone's offered me a Super Sonic 22 + cash on my end and another person's waved a Hot Rod DeVille 212 + cash on his end... and I'm rather tempted by the latter.
I could chuck pedals at it, it's not as big as a Twin, it doesn't weigh exactly two million tons, and I can still happily gig with it...

Fuck the Super Sonic I'd say, that's a shitty amp with no balls in my opinion and they want extra cash too, bye bye…
The Hot Rot Deville is still fucking heavy and a lot less amp, I wouldn't do it...

Re: Downsizing from Twin - I have two trade offers. Help me
I'd go with the Super 60 and try to get the other guy to add some cash to the deal. It'll still be plenty loud, and won't be as big as The Twin.
I had a similar situation last fall (almost exact really). Moved for college and had to downsize from my red-knob Twin. I bought a Laney Cub 12r and it has not been anywhere near loud enough for me, so I would expect you'd feel the same way with the Blues Junior. I mean, my Laney gets loud, but I can't keep it very clean.

Re: Downsizing from Twin - I have two trade offers. Help me
I actually used to think the exact same thing, but The Twin's volume doesn't actually go to zero volume using the volume knob. So, apartment range is roughly from zero to zero on the volume knob, and normal band range is roughly from .75 to one if you're not in a super noisy band.whiskey_face wrote:I would keep the twin. it has a volume knob so its perfect for an apartment.,

I'd keep the Twin, too. As for apartment volume, if you can't use an attenuator or pedals to get it to an acceptable level, how about just getting a little amp - something like a Vox AC4TV or a 1 watt Blackstar. Shit, you can use a Smokey for $30.
Compromise isn't always a good thing, especially when it comes to valve amps. Amps that play well in the bedroom won't play well on stage and vice versa. If you like the Twin and plan to gig again, hang onto it.

Keep the Twin. Get an attenuator. Part not with the Twin.
