fuzz & distortion for a sludge punk band?

I jammed with a drummer friend yesterday, and she's kinda between sludge punk and punk rock speeds right now. This will be her first band. Going to get my friend to play guitar, and it'll be his first band too. Really thinking it's going to be terrifying sludge punk stuff - like late 80's to 90's grunge era stuff like Drunks with Guns, Flipper, Shatter, Dimebag, with maybe bits of Black Flag and Melvins...

I'm going to play bass, and I'm pretty set with a Megalith, and maybe a muff behind it to cut down on the synthy texture. Massive huge thick fugly waves of bass roar.

For guitar, my pal is going to play a Strat, and we want it to be kind of thin and very cutting. Probably try the HM2 with the bass at noon and/or the Sepukku Octave Drone I have, but I know he's going to want to get his own pedal(s). Probably be playing out a Marshall valvestate or a Roland Jazz Chorus. What are some pedals you'd recommend to make a cheap amp make that kind of harsh thinner attack?

Valvestate does that on its own in my experience.

If anything rat and superfuzz are my recommendations.

My favorite thin sounding fuzz is the great destroyer.
Funny that it's also my favorite thick synthy fuzz and my favorite octave up glitchy by fuzz, sooo many tones in that box.

Can an FZ2 do a thin sound? I love the Electric Wizard sounds it gets, but don't have one, or another Superfuzz type pedal.

Never had much love for Rats, though I've liked a lot of bands with them.

I'll check out the Minifuck and Great Destroyer too. And there's a FRANKENSTOMP review of the Terminal! Woot!

RAT, Supercollider, HM2, or FZ2, I've had pretty good luck running all of those. The Valvestate can probably do that on its own though as others have said.

Sure, pretty sure the FZ2 can get pretty thin & cutting.

Not saying that Kayzer's tone is thin here (because his tone is always awesome), but he does a great job of showing off pedals in nontraditional contexts:

Also worth noting: Dr. Scientist The Elements can get you any tone you want. Period.

I've got nothing but respect for ss/bs, dwarfcraft, dr scientist, etc...

But for a style described as "90s sludge punk", it seems silly imo to hit your transistor amp with a fancy boutique pedlol. No offence to anyone, but 'minifuck' seems to be the standard answer to any "wich dirt pedal thread" here, regardless of the genre/style/task:s

A FZ-2 is pretty much beefed up and more versatile superfuzz. More then enough demos online to help you findout whether or not it'll suit your music. I love mine, but it's not for everyone.

Honestly though, that HM2 seems like a solid plan imo. If that and the octave drone can't get you there, you're probably doing it wrong:)

Good reason for that. I would use a mini regardless of what music I played.
