Drum machine suggestions? (also what did techno animal use?)

What about about Roland mc 303? There's one pretty cheap right now at a swedish auction site.

The MC-303 has a bad reputation that lingers from its release, when folks felt jilted by the inclusion of "303" in the name of an instrument that does not resemble its legacy. Background information incase you don't know, the Roland TB-303 is an 80s synth that creates the legendary acid bass sound from late 80s, 90s and early 00s dance music. The MC-303 was/is seen as an attempt to capitalize on the namesake.

Does it deserve the bad reputation? No.

Will it make Techno Animal sounds? Yes.

Now, consider the following: the sequencer is not great for whole arrangements or complex anythings. For drum stuff, it may be just fine. It will not be as good as the MC-505 or any (literally any) of the devices previously mentioned.

All of the sounds in the ROM are scooped so they sound clean and mesh well when layered together. To some folks this sounds thin. The MC-505 has more memory, so the sounds are less affected in this manner. Just be aware of that. You plan on distorting the hell out of this and running it through pedals, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Just focus on the sequencer. Check the manual, check YouTube. That's likely what, if anything, will bother you about the MC-303.

For even less money, but to roughly the same effect (I assume you're not interested in the MC-303 for its epianos, etc.), check out this video. It's 100% Boss DR-660 and quite impressive, I think:

So i've been watching a bunch of demos, and I kinda think most of these suggestions could work for me! I guess I'm gonna have to take a chance on one of them and just see if I like the interface or not. It's pretty hard to see if I'll bond with it over just a youtube video.

And I definitely got some gas for a MPC, People really make awsome stuff with those. But I'll save that for later. I just want an ordinary drum machine with pre made sounds for starters.

I might try the MC-303 if the price doesn't go up alot on that site. Right now it's only 75 $.

And yes, that boss video was pretty cool! I've seen quite many of those for sale around here too.

mc303 will give u a wide range of sounds. not only drums but synths, noises as well!
they are pretty neat. the one thing that got me about it is that you have to stop and switch between play and record. can't jump in and out while the sequencer is running.

its not a big deal, but it kinda kills the flow of the music for me. i like to just keep it running and jam on it. add new stuff, take out stuff, etc.

Good to know, that's definitely a minus. I guess it could work depending on what type of songs and stuff I do, but it seems really limiting to not be able to at least add stuff while playing.

I went with the MC 303! The price was so alluring. I think I'll like it, found a few really nice demos. It's a start at least!

Got my MC-303 yesterday and this is what I came up with after like two hours of reading the manual, haha. Fucking complicated machine. But fun.

I thought it sounded pretty good. Some kind of dancehall-y feel to the fill. I used a Darkglass B3K for distortion.
