Where yo action at?

Post by Moustache_Bash »

So, it's been a long time since I played guitar and especially one that is 25.5" with .11s. I feel like the action is kinda high past the 12th fret or so. But, I'm not sure if it's just cuz I'm out of touch with guitar and am a pussy with the .11s. When I put the ruler, butt end resting on the 12th and 11th fret, my E (the bigger, lower sounding one) sits at about .09375" or 1/10" or 2.54mm.

Is this high, or am I just a baby? It sounds low. Where do your guys' gits sit at?

I think that's pretty high. Mine's at like 1.8 mm there. Is your neck straightish?

Yeah, it's actually really straight which is why I was kinda confused and thought maybe it was just me. The weird thing is I just got it back from a fret level, so it should be good to go. Everything is nice, but the action. I mean, like, the single digit fret area is nice but higher up the action is kinda high. Can I just lower the saddles (it's a strat style guitar with the trem laying flat, so I reckon it'd be easy)? Is there anything I should be wary of when doing so?

I don't think there's anything to be wary of with the saddles. If it sucks now, it can't really get worse. You know, don't abuse the hardware or anything. Do you have to do each saddle individually on a strat? In that case you'll want to follow the radius of the fretboard. If the screw is hard to turn, try loosening the string so it's not putting pressure on the saddle. Fender has their recommended string heights listed somewhere on their website. I like just a hair above what they say on the low E side. They measure at the 17th fret. I like to use coins as feeler gauges. http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_mint/in ... ifications

so with a strat, when you go heavier with the strings, it increases tension on the springs and the bridge will rise. increase tension on the springs on the back. make sure the bridge is level. then adjust saddles to preference.

I like mine pretty low and luckily all my guitars cooperate. I go about 5/64ths on the bass side and 4/64ths on the treble.

I start off just a bit under Fender's recommended action and then drop strings down a little more so they buzz just a little while still sounding like actual notes across the fretboard. Sounds fine thru amp. It helps with my wrist problems, and if it's good enough for Neil Old then it's good enough for me. :thumb:

Low, low, low, I also like getting the slightest amount of fret buzz in my attack

Each of my guitars have pretty low action. The lowest is my Telecaster, I've just been too lazy to adjust it. The frets are low on it to begin with so it buzzes quite often.
The one with the highest action is my Telemaster, but only slightly.
