EHX superego pedal question

Post by Confuzzled »

Playing around with my effects chain and noticed that the superego tends to run hot signal wise. The back end of the effect tends to distort a little at its peak. Does anyone else have this happen? I have it placed after the dirt.

I use my Superego a lot and I am not having this issue. I have 4 fuzzes before it and a Boss pitchshifter in the superego's fx loop. Is it a new problem you're having?

Yeah, I'm not sure if its overdriving the speaker (I'm using a small headphone amp to avoid pissing off my douche neighbors) or if its something else. I'm going to have to disassemble my rig and try each pedal out and see if I can figure it out.

Which small headphone amp? I've used the Fender Mini whatever, and the speaker distorts when I run pedals into it on "higher" volumes.

The orange micro crush. Love the sound and so far everything sounds great but the superego seems to be the outlier

It's gotta be the Micro Crush. I have a hard time keeping that guy clean even with headphones

I've only had mine for two days. So far it's been great.

Mine has a pretty nasty clip to it when ran after fuzzes.
I'm using clean 100w amp and a high wattage EV 1x18.
I'll open mine up when I get out to my practice space again.
Maybe there's an input trimmer in there. :idk:

There's definitely a lot of volume in the Superego. I find that I have to tweak the dry and effect levels to get something seamless. But I've never had it clip on its own.

Looking back on this, how are you powering the Superego?

I had mine daisy chained on a 1spot with fuzzes and was getting a high-pitched squeal. Then I realized that the draw on the Freeze and Superego is higher (140mA i think?). So at that point I put it on its own 1spot and the problem disappeared. Since then I bought a Pedal Power 2+ allowing me to put each pedal on its own isolated supply. So if its daisy chained, that might be your problem.

The current draw isn't the problem - the 1spot can do 1000mA, but the power supply filtering on the digital pedals is the problem, which is why you need to have them on isolated power supplies.

Thanks goroth, I like learning. Nonetheless, he needs a separate or isolated power supply.

Hope I didn't sound like a dick in my reply seedy. That wasn't what I intended!

quick update: Spoke with EHX today and apparently they have heard of the overdriven sound with the superego but claim that it's only been reported with humbuckers. since I mainly use my jazz master pickup in my strat, they suggested I send it in with a $25 check and they will either re-calibrate or replace the pedal.
