Drum machine suggestions? (also what did techno animal use?)

Post by Pugie »

Hi!

I want to buy a drum machine, my first one, so I'm looking at different options.

I really like the sounds on the album Brotherhood of the bomb by Techno Animal (the Justin Broadrick and Kevin Martin projekt). Does anyone know what drum machines they used?
I also like the sounds on MIAs early albums. That's a Roland MC-505 i've read. So I'm definitely interested in that one.

So... tell me what your favourite drum machines are and if anyone know what techno animal used on that album I would love to know!

I guess my price limit is like 500-600 $.

In this price range: The Roland AIRA, Korg Volca Beats is a cool toy, limited but cool.
If software isn't a problem for you, go with Arturia Spark, you can buy the hardware controller too.
In you are a iOS user try the DM1 drum machine or any of the Roland 808 and 909 software emulation. DM1 is a gorgeus drum machine, but its midi sink sucks.

You're best off getting something older and sample-based to match the Techno Animal sound. Most of what you hear is real drum sounds sequenced and run through distortion as whole patterns rather than individual hits. For this, your price range is generous.

I think you can get the MC-505 and accomplish both requirements at once (and possibly deal with a fussy sequencer) or track down the E-mu PX-7 and probably work more easily.
Good deals with PumpkinPieces, hazelwould, PetZounds, Steelyeye, DannDubbleEwe (x3), skullservant (x3), ChetMagongalo, leaves turn, Helter, EvilCatBucky, OddKnowledge, vanderholm, Phengren Oswald, Uncle Grandfather, decomposing, MrNovember, multi_s (x2), smallsoundbigsound (x2), Dandolin, Strangle Tales who is a good dude

I will second the E-Mu PX-7 or MP-7 plus another ROM at your price point.

Right. Whichever Command Station fits your price and availibility plus the Protean Drums ROM. It's all the same.

Note that many if the old Command Stations are rock solid except for the data encoder which can get jumpy over time but is fixable with parts plus basic soldering skills. Ask your seller about his or her data wheel performance before bidding. If you decide to get one :)

See if you can find one of these and just run it through pedals... :thumb:

I'd get a used MPC and that way you have a huge library of sounds to choose from, plus looping and sequencing.

Thanks for your tips! Gonna have to listen to some demos.

I don't really want any software based stuff, my computer sucks.

I'm gonna look into these some more later today!

E-Mu PX-7 or Mp7
Roland MC-505
Roland TR-606
AKAI XR20
MPC

And I do plan on using a lot of pedals after the drum machine.

Remember that the MPC is a sampler and MIDI workstation, not technically a drum machine. The sound library that was mentioned isn't something you typically get out of the box, and these other suggestions have x0x step sequencers where the MPC does not without third party upgrades.

yea i've known a few ppl to purchase an MPC or similar sampler, then be like '"WHERE THE F ARE THE SOUNDS?" sooo yea just know that you have to fill it up w/ the dankness or else it literally has no sounds in it.

also, if u get a 1000 or 2500. the JJOS is a MUSTTT HAVE

don't forget about the Electribes either.
