Impedance is a lot like rainbows and magnets, in that it's fucking science and therefore unexplainable.
ICP 4 LIFE!
Impedance is the equivalent of resistance, except for AC circuits. In other words, it is related to the voltage and current of a signal. Different pickups, different pedals etc, all have different impedances when on (or when bypassed in the case of non-tb pedals). Normally this doesn't matter much except when one of those things is expecting to see a given impedance, and it sees something else. The result is that the sound is different to what you expected. And different in many cases means "crap". By being able to adjust the input impedance you can "tune" the pedal so that it matches whatever is coming before it, so that it sounds as it "should".

That’s quarter-assed at best.

This was helpful. What if it's first in the chain, your tuning it to the impedance of the pick ups?
