GGG shinei companion fuzz fy-2 clone

Post by trebleslapper »

Has any one built one of these? And if so how do you think it ranks compared to the original or the fredric unpleasant companion?

I built one but I used different tanies. Mine doesn't sound quite as biting as recordings I've heard of the original, but I'm not sure, someone would have to buy me a original for me to be sure.

I've built one using their schematic and parts list. It sounded pretty darned close to the recordings I've heard of the original (although a bit more raspy/biting). It is quite a nasty fuzz.

I built one of these too. great sounding fuzz but you gotta keep it on the whole time. It has a huge volume drop even when the volume knob is hard right. but whoever turns a fuzz off, right ;)

Cool thanks dudes.A volume drop huh,Well I was trying to avoide that but I will have to get some kind of boost I guess.Has anyone tried the fridgebuzz land of the rising fuzz pedal?

sammy, when I get done prototyping my new fuzz, I'll let you know. At its core, its a companion, but completely fuxed up

Hi all,

First post here but been making a few fuzz's and overdrives of late.

Looking for more info on the Companion, in particular what Transistors you're using? Especially those of you who don't get the volume drop issue (as I have the same problem). Been using 2SC1815 so far but have some 2SC536's on the way to try. Anyone got a better equivalent for the C536, or is the 2SC536 the one...?

It sounds great with the 1815's but the volume drop is just too much to deal with and I don't want to put a boost in, want to make an "original clone" :?:

Mate of mine has the actual Shin-Ei Companion pedal so I'm in a good position to advise as to realism of tone.

Any help would be much appreciated!!! :thumb:

Cheers,

Chris.

Yeah the 2SC356 is the same transistor.

A nice and simple easy fix for the volume drop is just to connect the volume lug 2 to the fuzz lug 2, that works for alot of people.

Second way to sort the volume drop... try changing the 10k resistor to 33k and the 15k resistor to 47k and the 0.1uF to 0.047uF at the end of the schematic, this is the section that causes the mid scoop and works by bleeding the signal so that's where alot of the problem lies.

I'll check out my friends Shin-Ei too and see how that is wired as regards Volume lug 2 to Fuzz lug 2.

If the 2SC536 and the C536 are the same it should just be a case of getting everything else to match up (obviously slight differences in component spec aside) - incidentally his original has no volume drop whatsoever, and I'm using the same PCB layout...the only difference is the transistors...that I can see.

I'll update you!

Thanks again!

C ;)

2N4401 and a 2N3904
Here's a pict of the pedal too for fun.
