Looking for a lofi compressor

Post by zRobertez »

I want a compressor that's not too clean or bright or pretty. I want mega ugly super uber squash and a lot of volume. I used to have a BYOC 2 knob comp and that's kinda the sound I'm looking for but I'm bad a DIY (so it kinda fell apart a lot) and I wanted more volume

Some options I've been looking at/had
Dyna Comp - I'm afraid it will have the same volume issue as the BYOC, every vid of it has the volume nearly maxed out, but has the lofi and treble roll off that I dig
Soul Preacher - Looks kinda crappy so that might fill the lofi part Im looking for but sounds pretty bright from what I've heard. Still interested though
Instant Lofi Junky - Looks like an awesome pedal that I would use all of but I don't know if there are enough compressor features to warrant buying for that even though i would probably keep for the vibrato part
Accountant - I had one a while ago, I wanted more squash

I'd rather not get anything huge or too full of features/knobs to narrow down my compression to its perfectest. I'm honestly just going to crank all the knobs and turn it on for fun :) I wish ss/bs made a compressor... That would have everything Im looking for! Also I know pretty much nothing about anything discontinued or out of production for more than like a year or two. i.e. vintage lol

Any recommendations?

If you decide you want a Boss CS-1, I've got one I'm getting rid of.

Get a dyna comp clone. I know a guy who makes one to script specs and it never leaves my board. Unity volume is about 2:00 and I love the thing. Should be an easy clone.

That's an idea. I could probably also go the mod route. Like get a dyna comp modded for some supreme level boost

Instant Lofi Junky is probably what you want. Watch some more demo vids...

i have an old Ibanez soundtank comp (it's a dynacomp clone) that i'd let you have for very cheap. the switch & bypass is terrible, of course. it sounds like you describe, though.

i think pretty much any older 80s / 90s compressor pedal will get u there.

i wish the instant lofi had a bit more flexibility in dialing in/out the compression. it is fantastic otherwise.

I feel like i have similar desires as zRobertez and have been wanting the instant lofi, but the lack of compression control and price are keeping me from going for it (vs my alternative of MXR comp + Behringer vibrato). And yet I know that pedal would be on any effects chain I ever have and would basically be on all the time. So probably worth it? :idk:

I don't like the compression on the Instant LoFi to be honest, it has this click at the beginning of the attack that I couldn't dial away.
Also for crazy vibrato stuff the Warped Vinyl is far superior in my opinion.

maybe have a look at the mid-fi overdrive, it has a built in compressor and with thee drive at minimum is certainly dirty/clean

It's going to depend on the architecture, but you could try voltage starving a reasonably lo-fi compressor that you have sitting around.
it might give you just that extra little bit of suck (I use the term with love)
