Jet City JCA20HV? In Europe?

Post by frigid midget »

I could use a cheap back-up head that can handle more brutal stuff a little better than my Fender can.

Not my first thread on the subject, but I can't seem to get a hold of any of the amps that were suggested, at least not within my budget.

So what's left of the Jet City hype? I remember when they first came out, people were raving about how awesome they are for the money, they seemed to get great reviews all over the net, not even from noobs alone.

So...is there still no shop in the EU that offers the entire JC catalogue? I'm particularly interested in the JCA20HV, but I can't for the life of me find a store in Europe that has one. I'd normally rather not buy an amp online, sight unseen and all...But for this kinda money I might be willing to risk it, if it's a brand new amp with a warranty, and if the store/seller is ligit.

Jet City stuff seemed to come out at the early stages of lower-priced tube stuff and just sort of faded.

No personal interest because I'm a clean amp guy, and well, they weren't.

Their ISO cab wasn't godawful though and was useful for what it was.

I recently pulled my JCA20 out of the closet and wound it up for a bit, and was surprised at how good it sounded.
They are not particularly versatile, they do not have good clean tones or tons of headroom, I wouldn't tour with it or expect it to keep up with a loud band, but at moderate volume slammed with a quality fuzz pedal...
I have no experience with the HV version, but the concept is a good one. I would absolutely immediately change all the tubes--this alone made a huge improvement--and I'll likely give mine the depth mod (HV has this already). I used to use it frequently and the amp has been super reliable. The customer service is also pretty incredible; they've given me recommendations for what choke to use (the company weighing in on an aftermarket mod, yup) and sent me a new jewel lamp--free--when mine starting dying. Try emailing them directly.
I bought mine used, hard to beat for the price of a fuzz pedal...

The 20h is basically an import version of a Soldano, the Atomic 20, IIRC, which is in turn Soldano's take on the hot input of a JCM-800 2203/4 with an EL-84 power section. Not a clean machine by any stretch but very good for a crunchy amp sort of sound. Verellen did a handful of clean mods of these, which people seem to have liked, but the power section makes it a weird platform for that. Maybe the mods are out by now, but most Jet City modding fans are interested in more gain, not less. And many of them seem to be abhorrent people generally, but that's another matter.
