I use everything all the time unless something does not make the cut sound wise or doesn't play well with the rest of my setup.

I don't see the point of having stuff that owns me and I'm afraid of.

If it's reliable enough to use live, cost isn't a factor.

I used to joke I brought $5000 worth of gear to a $50 gig back when that was real money.

All "vintage" stuff because that's what I liked to play. I watched it carefully and kept a phaser (ok, small semi-automatic) handy. Never had to use it for the gear.

It's a case though of "If you need it to sound like you", the cost is irrelevant if you can afford it.

The only piece of gear I'd think twice about lugging around with me if I was physically capable of playing shows any more is the Space Echo and that simply because cleaning heads etc got old but I'm of the era where bars were smoky and bad things happened. I'd lug a RE-20 in place of it for the preamp/general sound and call it good enough in most cases, although I know I'd probably bring the monster anyway because the big nasty colors make me happy.

If you're worried about damage/theft though just get a 'professional rider' on your insurance policy for playing out etc. so it's covered.

my vintage dmm is the only piece of gear I have that would qualify, although a part of that is just because it doesn't have a permanent spot on my board and I only use it for certain situations.

I wouldn't gig my finicky vintage pedals (80s DMM, v1 Fuzzrite) and Effectrode phase-O-matic Deluxe.....however they don't "just sit on a shelf" because they stay home/studio bound.
......actually yes they do, considering my "board" is a wire shelf from The Container Store...but they do see daily use.
They just arent practical for a road-worthy rig where reliability is paramount, nor would I want to risk anything happening to them damage/theft wise.
They excel in writing and recording in a controlled environment.

At stage volume, substitutions become less noticeable. Dunlop/MXR/Way Huge is exceptional for that application.
But for a record that lives forever...I prefer my unique OEM stuff, quirks & all.

I was going to say something like this. I know a lot of people can't tell the difference between high end and cheap stuff, but the problem is that I can haha.

Like what seems like most people here I don't see the point in gear that you can't gig with. Unless it's like CRAZY rare or something it's all replaceable and if you're careful nothing bad should happen anyway. And if you have insurance even if something bad does happen it's not the end if the world.

It's completely true that the audience doesn't care, and hey at stage volume I doubt I'd notice much of a difference if someone swapped one fuzz for another but I can't afford a second "cheap" board just for the occasional gig, so the good stuff gets used.

Can't help but pick the best pedal for the tone I want. Whether its a $30 DOD or a $300 something else... whatever works best. I do whatever I can to separate myself from the other bands on the gig. Whether its through attitude, playing style, effects, songs... I just want it to sound like me. If I am not trying to sound the best I can, then I don't see the point.

Unless the pedal was impractical for live use (weird layout, weird power supply, HUGE), it would be on the board.
+1

I gig and record with the same board, and the pedals on that have cost anywhere between $25 and $500 each. I'm always really careful about it and so far no issues.
This. I guess I am fortunate enough to play shows that don't have my pedalboard in close proximity to alcohol. If I buy stuff, I buy it to use. I am more upset at the idea of my Savage Woodworks pedalboard getting abused then my pedals themselves.

I'm the same, I play intense noise rock stuff so it's par for the course when we hurl shit around stage. I mean after 5 years of being dropped, having beer spilt on it or having people fall on my board nothings ever shit the bed.

The only thing that actually broke was a boss EQ when somebody spilt half a can of beer right into the fucking sliders. Even at that it still kinda works.

I don't play out sadly these days but if I did I'd use the same board I use at home studio or elsewhere, my stuff that sounds like 'me'

I gigged always with a digitech space station and can't imaging ever not doing except these days I got a modded xp-1000 because the real space station was so invaluable to my sound I wanted a backup, and buying the xp-1000 was cheaper than another xp-300

I'd be more than happy to use my strymon trinity live also, it's what I have written songs with and what sounds good now.
The only stuff I wouldn't actively choose are my Lovetones because they are a sentimental investment for home use. If I needed those sounds I'd use my clones for the sale of real estate more than anything though.

So,all in all yeah I have stuff that is for at home , but happily take a pedal board worth $4000 or something to gigs where I wouldn't even get paid.
