Evil Twin
This has probably been asked before (probably by me in past years) but what are all y'alls opinions on the Fender "Evil Twins?" They pop up pretty damn cheap a lot. Being that I don't need the regular twin reverb's super-clean tone, and wouldn't use the overdrive on their red-knobbed couterparts..... opinions? I played one when I got my deville a few years back, but it was pretty beat up and the deville seemed like a better deal at the time.

Re: Evil Twin
Pretty much fender took there sunn model t reissue threw into a combo and called it "the twin", never played one but I know russian circles used the reissues on everything pre memorial, and after seeing them live and really digging there tone I know I wouldn't mind giving the twin a try if its cheap.

Re: Evil Twin
They were decent clean platforms, I didn't like the gain channels.
Some techs don't like to work on them if I recall.

Re: Evil Twin
Lots of options. Didn't like the tone of distortion. I'd definitely get one if its cheap and sell if you don't like with no loss m

Hmm. I haven't read that yet. I think I may pick one up if I get the chance. Re: Evil Twin
The Evil Twin predated the Sunn relaunch by quite a few years unless I'm grossly mistaken - ET was mid-late 80s to early/mid 90s, Sunn relaunch in the mid 90s after grungery.

Re: Evil Twin
The red knob twin was from the late 80's, fender re-released "the twin" in the late 90's as part of pro tube series, not really sure where the "evil twin" title came from.

Re: Evil Twin
"evil twin" is just the popular nickname, if I'm not mistaken. Either way, it sounds like a good deal to me. I recall liking how the one I played sounded. I was just much more ignorant to why speaker sizes/types matter at the time.

Re: Evil Twin
When someone says "Evil Twin" it's red-knob era to me. That's what people referred to it because Fender still sold it as "Twin Reverb" etc and the name stuck, probably because of the evil red knobs.
The "The Twin" I don't even know where it falls into things.

Always liked the distortion channel on those things. I hear they're a maintenance nightmare, though.

Re: Evil Twin
I think a lot of it was it was one of the earlier Fender PCB things and the techs that were geezers hated anything that wasn't old construction.
My guy worked on them without much complaint, but he also could do board repair on other stuff.

Re: Evil Twin
The red knob fender amps were nothing like the earlier fender amps. CBS owned fender at this time and had yamaha building the boards over sea's, and then being shipped to the states for for final assembly. I used to rock an 85 deluxe red knobber, and remember a fender purist razzing me about owning a solid state fender that only claims to be made in usa.

Re: Evil Twin
There's a lot of myth about that era out there too, no idea if the Yahama rumor is true.
That said, I always did like my Deluxe 85/90/112/112+ stuff I owned (only thing they ever really changed was the gain section, which well, I didn't use).

Re: Evil Twin
Relative to my interests...
They do indeed pop up really cheap now and then. Plenty of power, on board dirt, blackface-ish cleans...Pretty rare for a Fender Combo as far as I know. Too bad they don't get a lot of love online, or I would've been tempted to try one out ages ago.
So I can't really help, but I'd appreciate it if you share your thoughts if you happen to try out another evil twin again:)

I will if I do!
I'm waiting to see if I can flip the Tiny Terror I've been trying to sell forever.
