Anyone ever buy a bunch of high end pedals..
and then do not use them live so they won't get beat up?? I guess I'm a weirdo but I've acquired some some decent stuff over the past few years from trades, sales and I'm thinking of putting a small Boss/MXR board together with a Nova System or M9 for shows.

Yep. I've got some pedals that I love using but will never gig with

While I can follow the logic for not gigging with "fancy" gear, it doesn't make any sense to me. I can't afford to buy or keep stuff that's just going to sit at home.

I don't 'play live', but there's some pedals I wouldn't use for that purpose cos they're precious in some way, yep.

Meh, nope. Everything I have, I either gig with or sell off. Can't sink money into stuff that just sits on a shelf. My Mobius cost me close to 500 bucks, but it's got it's share of dirt and beer and grime on it. I just don't care.

I'm kind of the opposite, the more I pay for something, the more I want to get good use out of it.
Unless the pedal was impractical for live use (weird layout, weird power supply, HUGE), it would be on the board.

I've considered constructing a beer shield for my board.
It's definitely unsettling when I do the math on how much my board is worth.

Exactly. And besides, most people listening to a band are not going to know the difference between a Line 6 and a Strymon. And when I'm playing out, sure I like having all of my 'tools' with me to pull out any tone but I think I could achieve that with an M9 and some choice pedals. I can't see taking my Bogner red, El Cap, Tremolessence etc and having some d-bag (or me, lol) spill beer on them..Fuzz_Pi wrote:I've considered constructing a beer shield for my board.

I guess it depends on where I'm playing. I've played nice places where a high end board would hold up just fine, but others where I had tons of sand, mud, rain on my stuff. I could always put them in a rack and switch via midi. I know that's not very ilf but I've considered it.

I gig and record with the same board, and the pedals on that have cost anywhere between $25 and $500 each. I'm always really careful about it and so far no issues.

Re: Anyone ever buy a bunch of high end pedals..
IF I had anything super high end, I would probably use it a lot as a studio tool. For specific sounds n stuff. I would tour with that gear if I had no other way of capturing the sound if it was a really distinctive sound. Other than that, most of the time the audience wouldn't notice tiny changes in sound. Hell, I'm pretty sure most seasoned musicians wouldn't know the difference ether.
Personally tho, I look at pedals like pieces of a modular synth. If they can break, I can swap them out easily. The majority of my pedals are easy to replace, with the exception being my DML10. The thing is built to get scars. If the equipment can't take a beating I'm not gonna use it.
In that vein, I'm really curious about emulation units. Fractal and the like. its all starting to sound less and less artificial the more I hear.

Re: Anyone ever buy a bunch of high end pedals..
I always understand this argument. But getting a good sound has always been important to me for me, I feel so much more inspired and think I genuinely do play better when I'm working with gear I'd wanna record with and feel I understand intimately, it sounds hokey but eh that's how it is, and I'd at least hope that an audience would pick up on that. Unfortunately it's just kinda worked out that the stuff I'm happier with tends to be on the expensive side.fuzzypumpkins wrote:Exactly. Gear is about making me happy. If it was about making the audience happy I'd just use a DS-1 and nothing else.
