Pedals You Are Stuck With

Post by chuckjaywalk »

A buddy of mine made me a trade offer I couldn't refuse: my Ditto for his Flashback X4. I hardly used the Ditto and I thought the whole Toneprint thing might be fun. We swapped and my pedalboard was forever changed. The X4 is freaking huge. Huge to the point that it isn't even on my board, proper, but after it and before my trusty TU-2. This huge blue box just sits there, the tap tempo light blinking at me. I should be content with the other delays on my board (Belle Epoch and DM-2), but there's a few things the X4 does that they can't. It has multiple reverse modes. It has a looper, which I don't use. Most importantly, it has the beautiful 2290 and 2290 w/ Modulation modes. I use those a lot. Anyways, it has sort of become this albatross. A weirdly shaped, gigantic monstrosity that sits next to my bed and blinks at me. The unending blinking.

A year ago, I won a Wren and Cuff the Caprid in a contest. It is a fantastic pedal. Pure J Mascis snarling Big Muff ferocity. It is also 4 times the size of a Boss pedal. I feel like an asshole not using it. I'd feel like an even bigger asshole selling it or trading it. So, I use it. I make myself use it. All the time.

My first pedal was a Bubble Font Russian Big Muff. It sits in my basement in its wooden box, unused. It has backwards jacks, doesn't use a power supply, and the battery leads are suspect. The Volume pot is failing. I mean, I could get it fixed, but that would take effort. I keep it because I know I could never, ever replace it.

Does anyone else end up feeling stuck with certain pedals or am I just neurotic?

I've been trying to sell my ibanez cs505 on and off with no success for like 5 years now, so yeah I feel like I'm stuck with it.

I have a Boss RE-20 that I don't think I've used in earnest in over a year. It sounds great, I love it, but most of the time I'm fine with my little Memory Toy. I hate keeping things I don't use, but I love the Space Echo sound so I can't bring myself to sell it.

I have an old Noise Swash from back when 4ms was 3ms that I also haven't used in ages, but it's unique so I'll probably have it forever.

Also when's the last time I used my wah?

Shit I have a lot of stuff I don't use.

Oh and no one will buy my Pork Loin even though I price it way below what the typical places do.

My first pedal was a USA big muff that my mom bought be for getting good grades when I was a kid. Now it's slightly broken and it sits in a drawer. I'd feel terrible getting rid of it though.

I have this Dist+ old dijon mustard yellow block lettering with a LED and AC mod - I never use it. I put it on craigslist, and never get any bites. I take it to my space and test it out once in a while - I'm taking it in again tomorrow to test with my new amp. Maybe I'll dig it. Maybe not. I've had it forever.

I recently bought a Super Feedbacker for $20 and I don't like it but I don't dislike it enough to take the effort to sell it. It'll sit in a drawer, forever....

I decided I am going to sell my Q-Tron. I never use it.

i have this black russian muff that was my 2nd or 3rd pedal ever. i never really use it anymore, but i keep it just for what ifs?...
i also have a dano pb&j delay that i bought used with 2/3 of the knobs broken. i love how it sounds, but never use it. the amount that i would get for trying selling it wouldn't even be worth the postage, really.

Sorry, but I don't think I can have much if any sympathy for you. :D LOL.
Firstly, the delay and the W & Cuff are two very nice pedals. Secondly, you got a nice deal on one, and got the other for free.

About ten years I bought ex-demo/display Danlectro Psycho Flange and Danlectro Shift Daddy (aka Shit Daddy). Both were piles of crap. Very fortunately, I was able to sell them both on - and about break even!

I' think I'm stuck with an original Boomerang looper. Fuck. How am I gonna get rid of that? And you think your TC delay is big? Why didn't you swap your Ditto looper with me for it !? :p

edit - oh, yeah, how did I forget, I've got this too:

I don't get stuck with stuff, I sell what I don't like or know I won't use in the future.

A few things I only use every year or so, but I know I'll need them again and well, once I've bought something twice, I never sell the second round because I'm not insane.

If it's broken, I just throw it away or give it away or trade it with full disclosure.

I don't let stuff rule my life.

If an item is big, and there's nothing that sounds like it, then I just accept it.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.

I hate my Jamman Stereo.
It sucks. It clips and the headroom is terrible and it's got the stupid tempo thing that always comes on and is stupid.
My entire board is based around trying to fix it. So I have a boost first in the chain so I can set the inout volume lower because it can take a loud signal better than it can just turning up the input volume for some dumb reason. Then I have an effects loop for my fuzz because the digital clip from the volume jump sounds terrible. Then I need pre loop and post loop reverb cause it comes out all clanky recorded clean and the digital out makes it sound clanky too. Then I need a post boost looper cause the looper itself is not loud enough unless I crank it then I need to crank the input volume and then it clips...
Without the jamman I'd have two pedals, a fuzz and a boost. With it I have 8...
But it's the only looper that has enough save spots, up and down footswitches a play and a stop switch that's not gigantic and doesn't have the same issues, like all boss ones are exactly the same. Every song on my band uses recorded rhythm guitar samples at one part or another. I am stuck with it, it's either that or another guitarist and that has not worked (egos of other guitarists wanting to play solos, change songs we've already written and recorded etc)
I hate this pedal, but it is my sound...

I dunno, I've pretty much stopped selling stuff because the few times I have and regretted it. (Original black & red Muff, silver face Bandmaster Reverb, Fender 210 cab with alnico JBLs.) I also have stopped lending stuff for more than a day because I don't get it back. (Hiwatt Lead combo, Boss CH-1, Boss LM-2, AKG mic.) So call me a hoarder, I don't care.

TC Electronic Nova Repeater and Boss BF-2 Flanger might as well be glued to my pedalboard.
