Expression/CV options...

Post by K2000 »

Is there an expression/control voltage device that is just a calibrated knob? Or another way to get repeatable changes in CV, in a small enclosure (not a keyboard, for example).

Background: I have a pedal with "Exp. In" in my mixer's effect loop. Changing settings on that pedal is hella cool, but I wish I could get back to exactly where I started, for the sake of continuity. The knobs on the pedal aren't calibrated, so I thought a calibrated CV might be a solution. Besides an expression pedal and keyboards, what are some small footprint CV options? Does not need to be graduated (switches could work, for example). But should be precise.

I don't know WTF I'm talking about, so remedial schooling is cool as well.

:yay:

That 8 Step looks very cool, and on the right track. I wonder if there's any simpler options (or maybe I can dumb that 8 Step down for my purposes). I'd want to 'turn off' the sequencer... maybe by putting all the sliders on the same setting, until changes are needed...

Honestly, a big calibrated knob could work too... smaller, simpler, cheaper...

What is a calibrated knob? Will a CV work necessarily with an "expression" input? maybe? maybe not?

Depending on what you mean by calibrated, something could probably be made very easy that is small and simple. What about something with a knob, a stomp switch and an expression input. then the stomp toggles between your preset pot, and the actual expression pedal. The whole device just plugs into the expression input on your current pedal?

So you set the pot to how you like for continuity or whatever , play the hits, then stomp, trip out in exp land han solo yolo, forget how you started but then stomp, bam back to normal, recover your fan base, magik..

There might be the option to hook up a rotary switch with resistors.
In the Tap LFO project (used on things like the Tap Tempo Tremolo) a potentiometer is used to select waveforms and/or tap multipliter.

This is a bit hit and miss with regards position on the pot rotation to acheive said waveform or multiplier.
Therefore, one can use a rotary switch with fixed resistors. This would give you your desired accurate reproducible CV
In order to work out the resitors you'd need, you have to set the Potentiometer which is currently in your Expression / CV pedal or whatever, where you like the sound, then measure the resistances across the lugs of the jack socket.

For an example of what I mean, see this datasheet http://www.electricdruid.net/datasheets ... asheet.pdf
Jump to page 8 for the rotary thing.

Those are both great ideas, thank you!

(When I said "calibrated" I meant "notched". So I could land back at the same setting.)

ah ok. i think if you search for pots with 'detents', you will find what your looking for. I believe small bear has some with 11 or 12 'detents'.
