DOD FX20-B stereo phaser?

Post by braaandooon »

Picked up a DOD FX20-B phaser while hitting the local garage sales this weekend, paid a wopping $5, so figured I couldn't go wrong with it, unfortunatly it takes one of the old school DOD style power supplies, and will be a few days before I'm able to test drive it. Anyone own one, or have played around with one. Only thing I can really dig up is that its a 6 stage ota phaser, and the only ones I've ever tried are the MXR offerings.

I love old dod pedals they are built like a tank..

For adapters that use phone plugs/jacks, the plug tip carries positive voltage. It is also the part of the plug that pushes the jack tip contact away from the default connection to switch from battery to external power, so make sure to have "positive tip" and "negative sleeve", especially if you mix this thing with boss pedals on the same wall wart supply :)

Yah I called up a few friends and found a 9v harness adapter I can implement into the chain, and plug into the dod's battery compartment, also picked up a digitech death metal and an old digitech multi fx unit at 5 bucks a pop, but have already decided they aren't for me, hoping I like this phaser as its somthing I'd rarely use and cant justify spending any kind of real cash for a phaser.

all the dod stuff is pretty good, i cant remember that model exactly but i got rid of my other dod stuff because i'm a bit of a fusspot about the buffer on them being a bit sucky and with the fx20-c there was a bit (too much) of a volume boost when switched on.
should sound good though, and if you can use it in stereo its a great effect

Not fond of that era DOD stuff at all but for $5, you cannot go wrong.

Hated their AC power options and usually did what you're describing and just used a faux 9v battery terminal adapter.

I'm very picky when it comes to phasers, and when I briefly owned one of these I couldn't get anything I liked out of it, fwiw.

Its actually a pretty decent phaser, I liked it best with a bass rig though, it can get pretty thick when the regen, and depth controls are set high. Comparing it for a few days with an older small stone, and this being my first time playing around with one of those, I have to say I dont like it, the volume drop bugs the shit out of me. Pretty happy with the DOD considering it was lodged into a box of old junk gear, schematic wise, this is pretty close to the black box ross phaser, but with an added depth knob. Still tinkering with it though and trying to see where it fits best in my chain, so far I've been using it to add modulation to my rv-3, and also like the fact that it "warms" things up some when stacking those two together. Probably a good phaser for an ambient/experimental board in a guitar rig, and in my opinion probably a very underrated phaser for bass.
