Depth Charge!

Post by neonblack »

Can we just talk about this for a minute? I did some wheeling and dealing (less wheeling, more dealing) and snagged Dan's in the classifieds. I've played a couple of brassmaster/assmaster based Fuzzes (Oxide, Diabolik) and while I loved the sound and how well they cut through, I just felt like I couldn't get enough balls out of them. Even though both are marketed as bass fuzzes, it seemed like in order to get the bottom to shine I had to turn the clean blend up so much that it was overtaking the fuzz sound. From what I can tell, this won't be an issue with the DC. I know Behndy and Excane are big depth charge advocates, and maybe they can chime in, but does anyone else have some experience with this beast?

I don't really have any questions. Just wanted to talk about it. Watched the 4 demos I can find of this thing like 100 times now. I especially love Excane's of the b3k pushing the DC. I'm hoping to get similar results with my Mini.

Also, I saw that johnk on TB cloned one and added a starve to make it "chunkier." This interests me. I wonder who I could convince to mod mine...

Already thinking of getting it rehoused. If I had the money, I'd get Dan to do it before he sent it to me.

Sorry for the rant. Sick and drunk on nyquil.

Well, if, for some crazy reason I don't like it, you can have dibs on the flip.

DC is one of my favourite pedals for bass or baritone. I don't remember where I read that it's a clone of the Maestro Brassmaster, but its sound is quite different from an B:Assmaster, and could be easely compared, instead, with a standard Superfuzz like an old Univox or a Wattson. Anyways, it has way more volume and gain of the other superfuzzes, but it stays in the same sonic territory. Even the mode 2 of the FZ-2 sound more similar to a DC than the B:Assmaster: you can get a sound that's really close. Obviously, the DC has more sustain and more harmonics than the Boss.
You're not a musician, you're a low frequencies generator!

oh man, nice. I've never played a superfuzz before. Isn't the ss/bs Buzzz based on the superfuzz? That was another one I was GASsing for.

I'm hoping this will be my main angry destructive cut through the mix fuzz. Does it stack well with other stuff?

I own a ss/bs super puzzle which is a modified superfuzz. i think he replaced the super puzzle with the buzzz. the puzzle is great sounding.

The Buzzz is fucking killer. So many textures hidden inside, some of which have crazy low end. Roll back the volume knobs on your guit or bass and it gets trashy. mmmm.

Yes justin meldal-johnsen confirmed to me that he and Trent Reznor both used a Depth Charge for bass. He has a subforum on Talkbass. Cool guy.

I had the Diabolik for a while. I bought it based off TB's reccomendation and Juan's demos of it. I liked it, but it definitely didnt feel like a bass fuzz, even though its marketed as such.

Anyone have a good example of a NIN song heavy on the depth charge? Im totally nerding out until it gets here.

Whoa. I don't know if that's the depth charge, but if I can get my bass to sound like that, I'll be happy.

Do you have a Buzzz? Maybe once I get to know the DC a bit we can do a little temp trade. Id love to try a Buzzz. Im hoping theyre different enough to justify getting both.
